I would say Guild Wars but if you do decide to get a monthly fee mmo, WoW hands down.

Duh, Guild Wars. Or, www.knightonlineworld.com , This actually isn't a bad game, good graphics, ok skills, a lot of items, very large community. But if you don't mind paying 40-50 bucks, get Guild Wars.

-a lot of crafting -action-packed -Good community -Got to Be Free!

It's pretty stupid asking all that and wanting it to be free. Guild Wars is the only retail free "MMORPG" and that dosen't have a good community [debateable however] and it dosen't have a lot of crafting. If you are prepared to pay [which if you want those features, you have to be] then there are a million and one MMOs that you could get, WoW probably being the most well known and also quite fun, the crafting isn't amazing, but it is there and it is quite fun.

Also, if you'd be willing to pay, stay far, FAR away from Final Fantasy XI and Everquest. I don't think Nights looks very good, either, but I haven't played it. I did, however, hear some druggie at my school raving about it, so I'd keep it on the shelf if I were you. Also, I don't have any clue what it offers, but Maple Story is a free MMORPG that a couple friends of mine are completely addicted to. Just keep an open mind to that one. Besides, the price can't be beat! XD

I didn't play it myself, but maybe you should take a look at Ironrealms. http://ironrealms.com/ It's free and seems to have as much crafting and community as anyone could wish for.
