Back in 2009 the game was announced with a nice trailer. Then the project ran into legal trouble due to the various licenses for fictional robots and it got very quiet around that game.

Now they're back and posting updates (which, to be honest, are pretty meaningless but still get you into MechWarrior mood) and seem to prepare to announce a release date: MechWarrior

I hope they'll get it right. I suspect that they will sacrifice many aspects of what made those games great to appease the mainstream gamers, but that trailer back in 09 did seem like the real deal.

From the news bits they release it seems that the game might play at a different time than originally planned, that might be a result of the legal action: to avoid using copy-righted old mechs they seem to be designing new ones.

So the release date will be summer 2012. But, as it turns out, the game that was presented in 2009 really doesn't exist anymore. Instead they are working on a F2P MMO.

I was looking forward to a Mechwarrior SP campaign, but this coule be interesting as well. Especially as they seem to have some plans for a persistant world, so it wouldn't just be WorldofBattlemechs.

Some cockpit art. The background image seems to be a pasted photo, but the cockpit itself looks quite good:

I've always been kind of suspicious of f2p games. But that does look rather good....

MWLL is still around for those that are interested in mods. =p

Living Legends looks nice as well, but I don't own Crysis, so I didn't try it yet.

This new game will use the latest CryEngine, so it'll probably look good. I'm suspicious about the f2p part as well (it will probably be something like world of tanks where you have to pay some money per month unless you want to go insane) and would have preferred a single player game, but if they put as much love into all aspects of the game as they did with the cockpit then it'll definitely be worth a try.

Honestly, the announcement that this is now some "free to play" online thing has me very disappointed. I wanted Mechwarrior, not some MMO where I have to "grind" to earn C-bills and get weapons and mechs. Maybe if it was like MW4 Mercenaries where you did (well made) missions and stuff it wouldn't be bad. But I am not optimistic.

That was my initial reaction as well. Grinding in a MMO just doesn't compare to a single player campaign. The multiplayer part should be more interesting though.

There is a new trailer out: MechWarrior Online Official Teaser Trailer - YouTube

It doesn't really get me as excited as the trailer for the MW series reboot, but I still like the cockpit footage. Although I dislike that they got the startup sequence wrong ("nominal", gdamnit!).

I was just thinking that the gantry/crane must be built with absurd tolerances to compensate for the poor structural engineering >_

It is a crane that is supposed to carry a 100-ton mech around a spaceship which is re-entering into an atmosphere. Absurd tolerances are probably necessary regardless of how you install that thing.
