Well, i hope that's gotten you pumped, because the 10 days i've been waiting since i preordered this bad boy after just getting a wiff of the demo was enough to nearly send me into state of shock at how high quality and polished the AI and gameplay itself was. I have spent the first two days since it's release playing it without mercy, getting my PC up to a nice crispy temperature of 75 C, now i think it's about time i've reviewed it so the rest of you don't miss out on one of the most mind blowingly intense shooters since... Probably since F.E.A.R. 1 came out.
Story: 8 The story is as great as ever with monolith behind the wheel, so with those gears in motion, you'll experiance horrific, touching, and all around insane sequences. And although alma hasn't changed much since your last run-ins with her, your main character HAS. Although it's refreshing to experiance it through someone else, it doesn't have that same feeling, but i'm sure you'll warm up to him soon enough. Theirs not much i can say about it without revealing or giving obvious hints towards major spoilers, so alls i'll say is, the main story takes some severe twists and turns throughout.
Atmosphere: 9 The atmosphere in this game is nearly perfect, with the pure vibe of a lingering city from the aftermath of nuclear destruction. The lighting effects are put to great use and many parts in this game, mess with your mind more so then any other game i've played, as you'll actually be startled enough to fire blindly, second guess your instinct of what and how many of whatever it is, are near or around you, and might even often believe to have mabye seen something lurking within whatever shadows could've possibly tricked you. It's an amusement park of horror and with Alma running the show, you'll find most fears are not fakes, and some of these, CAN kill you. Just remember, when your in that dark hallway or large silent room, lit only by mabye 1 or 2 light sources, Alma is always watching.
Graphics: 9 The graphics are PHENOMONAL, even though some of the textures aren't the greatest you've ever seen, just the way everything is captured gives everything that special "CGI" feeling almost constantly. The things that are greatest with it's graphical acheivements though is it's use of depth of feild and motion blur, it's ambient occlusion, and it's lighting. The main reason i didn't give it 10 is because you can't destroy lights like in the original, they only flicker this time for a short while, and their are some small graphical glitches aswell.
Gameplay: 10 I'll be blunt, F.E.A.R. 2's gameplay is the most inventive and creative i've played in years, since bioshock. The way you can manipulate the environment gives you a feeling of control like never before, using ALMOST anything as adjustable cover, using fire and electricity to your advantage, shocking water, lighting enemies on fire, even if the AI isn't in water, you'll still be able to find ways such as power boxes and electrical grenades. The AI also makes use of these things too, and will react to them if they are effected by these things realisticaly aswell, jumping over ledges and off catwalks if their on fire to desperately try and put themselves out, leaping and jumping through glass windows, opening car doors from the vehicles remaining wreckage as cover, it's all in their and all usable by you aswell. I've never glamored at setting enemies on fire this much before and i intend for it to stay this way. Gore and destructability are at an all time high here, blowing all limbs off, pillars apart, vehicles to smithorenes, books, glasses, bottles, boxes, glass, and even walls to peices, infact, i've yet to experiance any game with vehicle combat as satisfying as F.E.A.R. 2's mech parts, litterally demolishing streets and buildings as you search for enemies in thermal vision like an unstoppable terminator, ripping apart soldiers and smaller grunt bots with missles and dual miniguns. It's almost like violent poetry.
Controls: 7 I found myself remapping my keys from the start, mainly because of how uncomfortable and forgettable some of the keys are for this game, i mean you have to manage guns, jump, crouch, slo-mo, fireing, grenades, run, changing grenade types, reloading, use key, iron sights, changing rate of fire, info menu, melee, thermal vision and flashlight! theirs plenty more such as movement keys and whatnot, but those are all the main ones, the main ones! i know it's hard for them to accurately and comfortabley arrange the keys, but it doesn't take that long and you probably won't have to change too many functions.
Overall: 8.6 Ask yourself, "do i like action? do i like fun interactivity within my games? do i like completely obliterating enemies? do i like some small puzzles on the side?!" if you've answered yes to 2 or more of those questions, this game is for you, hands down, no arguement, it's definately appetizing with it's length, atleast an hour and 15 minutes per level, and if that's not enough it's got enough weapon variety to choke a horse! It's got guns, lots of guns, grenades, many types of enemies, long campaign with a fun variety of different settings, and all the blood you can handle! If their was ever a game that i would recommended to action gamers, this would be my first pick.

Whoo hoo, it's officially available in the US! Well, I can't comment on the full game yet, but I hope it's better than the demo was. For one thing, the demo didn't showcase some of the gameplay features you mentioned, like the use of fire and electricity.

I'm also not inclined to think the graphics are all that great, esp the drastic changes in lighting. Before the light and shadow effects were very moody, now everything looks a bit washed out and plain.

I noticed you didn't mention mp play at all in your review. From what Gamespot says, it's not so good. I played FEAR mp minimally, but it was fairly intense. Worldwide the review sites listed on GameRankings.com are averaging 77%, largely due to GameSpot giving it only 70%.

None the less I will reserve final judgment when I get the chance to play the full game. I used to trust GameSpot's reviews a lot, but lately I've had my disagreements with them. Usually it's in cases where I feel they rave too much though, and that is obviously not the case here. However if mp play is their primary reason for such a low rating, which it appears to be, it won't bother me much, because I really don't play mp anymore.

Glad you're enjoying the game, because to tell you the truth, I have been a bit skeptical about all the rants thus far, many citing only minor things. You do tend to only write reviews of games you really like though. It's largely a personal preference thing, but it starts to sound biased when there is very little in them you dislike.

I would buy it, but my DVD drive decided to go out on me.. My only form of currency at the moment is a Best buy gift Card ($100) and A gamestop giftcard($75).

Looking online, DVD Drives with a decent speed (20x) are about $80.. Wish I could order from Newegg and save $60, but whatever.... Will probably pick up both pretty soon. I loved the demo, despite how short it is, and the weird "jumpiness" as if it's loading..

I didn't include MP because i couldn't find any servers :P And yes, true, i do only review games that i "like" but that tends to be all i pick out, and that it's left a good taste in my mouth and i have fully finished the game. If it was bad, i would've said it was bad, but it's clearly far from bad, any nitpicks reviewers are having are largely just their own distaste for something in peculiar. Honestly though, the only thing i could complain about if i tried would have to be the graphical glitches which need to be worked out, but since glitches aren't part of the game, i typicaly don't factor them in. I also noticed i forgot largely about how the AI fights and how intelligent they. I mean, i've played alot of shooters last year, but none of them really stretched what you can do and haven't really expressed themselve freely enough with all that an FPS can do, but FEAR 2, it just seems to be on top of the ball with things, kind of revolutionizing the FPS a little bit, theirs also some quicktime events scattered throughout, which was rather refreshing to see for an FPS again.

Well, like I said, mp doesn't matter that much to me. I was just curious if that was GS's primary reason for such a low score. They also mentioned they thought the story offers little mystery or suspense and the random scares and level designs are cliched.

Since I thought the scares even in the demo are now much more effective, I take the latter with a grain of salt. Nor was I ever all that engaged by the story in FEAR anyway, or maybe just the way it was told via random phone messages. I also didn't think the level design in the demo was any worse than previous FEARs.

I'm keeping in mind that if you toss out the high (90%) and low (70%) scores at GameRankings, which I feel is good to do just like they do now in the Olympics, you end up with 81%, much closer to that of your rating.

I don't feel it's wrong to include graphics glitches in a review as part of the rating. After all, it can adversely affect your enjoyment, esp if you have pretty good spec you've spent a lot on.

For instance in GTA IV the texture detail can severely fade in and out. Stairs can go back and forth between looking like stairs and ramps right in front of your eyes. Roads can look like rivers of blurry, gray clouds you are knee deep in.

I'm not saying the glitches in FEAR 2 are that bad, but even though not an intended part of the game, they are part of the end product at release and should be considered as part of the critique. It's is esp important to note them if nothing else in case they are never fixed.

I'm glad to hear there are many new weapons and the campaign is long though, that was unexpected. I'll probably have the game by tomorrow. I sincerely hope I like it as much as you.

Sounds pretty good, i'll probably pick it up this weekend if they have it in town. I absolutely loved FEAR and its expansions, so this should be great.

I don't know if i'll start it right away though, Dead Space is taking up most of my gaming time right now.

Its a pretty decent game, i rented it tonight, i think i'm halfway through in about 4 hours? So that isn't too bad considering how short some games are now... The shooting doesn't seem to be as repetitive this time, although i don't know why (Its basically the same), but the levels are a bit more varied. From what i've played so far, its a pretty decent game.
