I realize this is outside of spam, and for that I am truly sorry. You really should just ban me for this.
I've played more recent ones, like Underground, World, and 2010 Hot Pursuit , but I just can't get into them, though I did play World a decent amount, I suppose. I enjoye the Christmas-time ski jumps.
In 2010 HP, my play style descended (quickly) into downloading a completed save game and driving 100% in the "wrong" lane. The roads were damn boring and the cars felt slow to me. Never bothered with the "plot", if it can be called that.
High Stakes is practically a NFS III expansion, imo. They're both great, HS just has damage modelling + effects, somewhat better AI and graphics, and more races and cars, and that damn helicopter.
It even works in Windows 8! You can find the patch links on the wikipedia entry for the game.
This is my one non-spam thread for the year, so I hope you've enjoyed reading this.
I take what n0e says way too seriously

Plot? What's that? In my day, NFS games consisted of a series of races with no explanation as to why, and we raced them with pride!
Exactly! The "plot" in later games was so forced and poorly done. I just want the little "most wanted" and "top cop" medals dammit!
