Well, I getting ready to make a new RTS game and I would like your opinions. And Ideas are good to, especially a name for it, which I can't think of. Some features may have to wait for later games I make, when more experience is on my side, but I'll keep everything I can. Below is part of a document I sent to one programmer who is helping. Tell me what you think and present ideas. Overview of teh RTS game (no name yet, if you can think of a good one it would be much appreciated)
Make the game as realistic as possibal without getting ourselves sued.
Uses highest tecnology avilibal, and values each soldier individually.
Plenty of suicide bombings and low technology with numbers
USA allies, combination between med.-high technology and reasonable numbers.
Has an affinity for nuclear weapons.
In order to gain money, players must collect supplies. Each supply gathering units can hold a certaing number of supply boxes. Each box holds: $100, 40 food, 100 ammo, 50 fuel.
As the game progresses, fuel and food gradually go down, ammo goes down 1 for every shot the players units fire (this excludes ships, big missiles and machine guns.)
When food is down, units move slower, have lower health.
When Fuel is down, they move slower.
When ammo is below zero, they can't shoot.
In "instant action" game mode supply levels begin at:
$15000, Food:500, Fuel:500, and ammo:3100
in online play: each player would pick their team (up to 2 teams of four people each)
and then pick thier rank in the team. Ranks are: CIC (commander-in-chief), and commanders 1-3. the CIC of a team would begin in control of the Command HQ and construction units (dozer and crane, usually) each of his subordinate commanders would begin with, say, three tanks and fifteen infantry. As the game goes on, the CIC can assign control of any units or structures on his side to the command of any player on his team, from the command of any player on his team. This includes himself. In the corner of the screen, in these games, there should be a series of text windows, one for each player on your team, where orders and reports can be given to other members of your team. normal commanders should always listen to the CIC orders or he can take thier units and buildings away! Command of units or buildings would be changed by the CIC pressing crtl+the number key corresponding to the person whose command he wants the uit to be in. So by selecting a unit of a subordinate and pressing crtl+1, the CIC would be able to give himself control of that unit. If a player quits the game, all hid stuff is given to control of the CIC, if the CIC quits, the next commander in line becomes the CIC, and all the former CICs units become his. Later I'll send some diagrams of how the online screens should look and work.
Ground-for tanks, trucks etc.
Water-for ships and subs
Rubble/Muck-only infantry and special vehicles can cross these.
Obstacle-Only infantry can cross this
Air-Helicopters, missiles and airplanes
Pavement1-Dirt roads, units move faster on these.
Pavement2-Concrete, asfault, and brick roads. Units move fatstest on these roads.
Buldings are garrisonable by infantry. To clear a garrisoned building send in 5 foot soldiers (only basic machine-gun armed infantry).
The following civilian buildings can be captured and utilized by sending in a field technician (often useful to send at least 5 troops withhim to protect the buyilding)
Power plants- provide 7 power
Nuclear powerplants- provide 10 power
Warehouses- store 70 supply boxes
Gas storage facility- gives 150 fuel upon capture and 10 fuel every minet or so.
Farm silo- gives you 80 food and can store 60 supply boxes
Barn- stores 150 supply boxes and gives 70 food upon initial capture
Factories- Gives 160 ammo upon initial capture and 40 ammo every minet or so
Hangars- Shelter 1 aircraft
Hydro-electric Dam- provide 8 power
Oil derricks- +20 fuel and $100 every minet or so
Car garage- act as repair center
Gas station- +100 fuel
And now...The units (the ones I've already chosen at least)
carries an M-16A2 and HE grenades
Carries a LAW, guided missile launcher
Can utilize civilian buildings for your use
Picks off pesky infantry
Must be rescued in some missions
has a heavy machine gun and can carry 3 men.
Bulldog light tank-$1400
Basic US tank
can hold 5 troops and heal them
Can carry 12 men
has a small machine gun
can carry 50 supply boxes
Builds tents and can clear construction sites.
Armed with stinger missile launchers
USAs most advanced tank
launches 12 APDSs at great distance
Slef-propelled deadly accurate howitzer
Basic USA fighter
carries 8 AGMs, 12 rockets and a chain gun.
USAs most advanced fighter
Stealthed, carries 2 cruise missiles
Huge bomber, carries 2 bunker busters.
Stealthed, carries three cruise missiles.
Availible for control in some missions
can carry 12 men, has a heavy doorgun
Has small deck-gun. very fast, has helipad.
Virginia-class missile submarine-$???
2 torpedo tubes and 3 missile launchers.
Mobile Patriot System.-$2300
just like it says. Has enormous range, power and accuracy.

10 supply boxes armed with 6 torpedoes or 12 scatter bombs (which do you think would be best?)

Situation control center.(Sit.Con.)-$2000
allows production of more advanced units and structures
The skynet center allows acces to all military satellites in orbit, from the spy satellites
to the Missile shield satellites. It also allows you to call in heavy airstrikey every few minets.
launches an ICBM
houses and produces fighters and helicopters
alvilble only in some missions, it houses many aircraft, from Apaches to B-52s
Can be built anywhere. Hold up to 12 men and heals them
like a medic tent for vehicles. Houses 2 and repairs them
Build supply gatherers and construction units
holds 200 supply boxes

Sounds good, good luck finding someone to make it. Most people hate realism, though, for some odd reason. :uhm:
I know, this one is for the realism fans. later I'll have other games. And actually, once you achive certain goals, you can get new "unrealistic" units. And I have already one programmer and an EA games employee (ex) who can help. And I'm still hunting...

If you are aiming for realism then do not standardise on the units that each variable element of the game provide. For example the amount of energy, & storage of a power station / warehouse should be unique to that size/ type of facility not the same for all.
Also can you give more background on what you are trying to create? There is a large amount of stats for what seems to be a team based MP fps?
I could (inspiration & willing) produce some concept artwork to allow people to get a feel for the desired look & feel (l&f) of the final product (V 1.0). Personally I dislike the idea of reducing what has happened in Iraq to some stats & gun'ho' gameplay. If you are being ironic & using the game as a means of pointing out humanity's stupidity why not go for the jackpot & make an Israel Vs Arab stealth, strategy fps & model the very volatile border regions & mountinous terrain. It would be different, completely new, in the same vein of what you are creating here. You would have 3 sides, the 2 mentioned + the UN (in which you could chose to play as any Western army unit so European American etc. etc.), & still keep the balance of guerilla Vs the better kitted Israel.
Just make a total conversion mod for C&C Generals ZH using the ideas you thought up with, thats easier than making a whole new game
but it is also more limiting. This way I more options. I don't have time atm to give more detail, so it'll have to wait until later today.
Sounds like it'll be a great game. I'm really sorry I can't help, but I'd do more harm then good.

How about no. CnCs engine is now outdated so unless you know a whole lot about programming dont mod off it. Besides the gameplay stuff you want the game to have a free look like ground control and you should be able to select as many units as you want. And build as many units as you want no food or pop cap lock.
