I prefer well thought out singleplayer games over multilayer games, simply for the fact that most people on the planet seem to be assholes.

It's not hard to find decent people to play with. Especially when playing Guild Wars. I just don't heal the people that don't play as a team :D (oh, the powers a monk has...)
Online gamers in the games I play are a bunch of dicks, and massively online multiplayer is just devoid of a rewarding experience, in my personal opinion. I like single player games that make you think or are just good to spend rainy days with. HL2, Grand Theft Auto, Prince of Persia, etc. Most online-focused multiplayer shooters usually have bad single player campaigns/missions, anyway.
I like both, but I prefer single player games more now since I rarely have large amounts of time or attention I can dedicate to playing a game. At least when playing offline, I can just pause a game to check on the kids or to pretend I'm actually doing something productive in the computer room when my wife walks by. :D
I think that FPS games are often more fun online, but I also really like a rewarding SP experience. I really can't wait for Oblivion which should be an incredible offline game.
I like playing the odd game online but I play offline a lot more. I like being really immersed in games and enjoy having some from of a story or background to the actions I'm carrying out while playing a game.
I guess my habits from playing with toys have carried over to games. When I was younger I couldn't just pick up some toys and immediately start playing, I needed to make a story and have a reason for why this toy was killing this one or something...:)
There is a general lack of quality multiplayer games. Most seem like a quick addon with the standard FFA/ Team FFA modes. A lot of the maps are small and aren't of the highest quality so more can be produced. Right now I have been playing a lot more single player than I do multiplayer. Haven't played any multiplayer games in well over a month.
I prefer online. It's just always something different, and if you get on a nice server, you may be lucky there aren't too many ... let's say 'annoying' people. It's the most fun when you are playing a mod, as most of the crowd doesn't play that game, and many 'annoying people' go by. I prefer FPS's online (CS:S, UT2004).
But offline games like GTA are great as well. Even though I always quit if i am stuck at a point for a week or something, which is too bad. That's why i mostly prefer games w/ a multiplayer-option: then i can switch to something where i can't get stuck.

I prefer to play offline because most of the people I play either cheat or have really annoying high pitched voices and they make fun out of you because there beating you, you don't get any of that offline. ;)
