Okay, so... I had a bunch of Twitch Prime loot for Paladins and decided to give it a whirl. I mean, it's free. It's by HiRez, a fairly renowned developer. It couldn't be that bad, could it?

Well, let's see. To start out with, the bloody splash screen looks like a cheap Chinese Overwatch knock-off, right down to the character design. That's a terrible first impression, but I'll let it slide. Typical free to play main menu. Interesting character customisation system, I actually rather liked it. Same with the monetisation - a rotation of free heroes, with the option to buy new ones for a currency you earn through playing. Same as Heroes of the Storm, essentially.

I tried out some of the heroes, and honestly they feel like rip-offs of Genji and Symmetra from Overwatch. I can't get over it. I really want to like the game because it seems like they actually have a good idea going with the customisation and stuff, but oh my god it feels so cheap.

Have anyone else played it? Anyone else feel that way?

I played it when it was in beta. It was alright.

IIRC they had some of their designs up before Overwatch. I even recall seeing people positing about how Overwatch was stealing stuff from Paladins.

Overwatch is the more popular one though so most people ignored it.

I just did a quick search, and although I didn't dig deep enough to find anything from before its launch, I did find multiple articles where HiRez throw shade at Blizzard over their newest hero looking awfully familiar to one of the Paladins heroes. Seems they're both quite keen on "taking inspiration".

So, one is free.

That's about it if we're being honest.

This seems to be a trend now. Mikey introduced me to Fortnite which is just a silly clone of PUBG. Of course, clones are nothing new, it's just unashamedly copying what is popular. This has been going on since the days of Pacman.

I would say there's a greater difference between Fortnite and PUBG than Paladins and Overwatch, though. Even gameplay wise. Fortnite is an arcade, fast paced shooter, while PUBG is a realistic milsim. Overwatch and Paladins are... Pretty much identical in those respects.
