So I was just wondering if anyone has a list of games that are or will require a windows live gold membership to play online. Just want to know which ones to avoid.

Microsoft is making people pay to play pc games online now? Is this like some Xbox Live Service? Never heard of it but sounds like a ripoff

Slow-mo, I made a big fuss voer it when Haloe2PC came out.. It's really low. The issue with Halo2PC is that you can't even play a LAN game without XBLive Gold..

What the hell? So I couldn't even play Halo 2 with my brother if I ever got out of my chair?

That sucks, big time. What if you don't even have an internet connection?

In the case of Halo 2 PC, you can join servers and play multilayer with a free Games for Windows Live silver membership. You will be limited with a few things such as you wont have multiplayer achievements, being able to set up your own server at all and matchmaking services are limited if I recall.Somewhat of a rip off, yes.Practically all of the games mentioned only require a free silver account to get the basics of playing online and being able to join servers.I think you require gold membership for shadowrun if you want to play cross-platform multiplayer matches. They only seem to want to get a Gold membership subscription out of you if you some other quite trivial and basic features which are hardly worth the money and shouldn't be charged for really in the first place.

And crisisuit, you don't have to pay anything to play Universe at War online. You'll just be limited when it comes to matchmaking services and stuff.Because Microsoft suck like that.

For clarification purposes, from wikipedia. -

Games for Windows – Live Silver Membership Features

  • Single gamertag
  • Common gamer profile
  • Common gamerscore
  • Single player achievements
  • Private chat via text and voice
  • Common friends list and online presence
  • PC only multiplayer including browsing a list of active PC games

Games for Windows – Live Gold Membership Features

  • All Silver membership features
  • Multiplayer matchmaking with friends
  • TruSkill matchmaking
  • Multiplayer achievements
  • Cross-platform gameplay

Just like to point out, if you already have an Xbox Live Gold membership, it carries over, so for example, if I'd want to buy Universe at War, it wouldn't be too bad considering I have a gold membership on my 360, but essentially, yeah it sucks.
