Adventure and horror are not normally genres I like. However, I decided to give Penumbra: Overture a try after I saw it advertised by Paradox Interactive publishers.
The storyline is well developed. The puzzles are intruiging enough, and the sounds will have you shivering. There are some features that are very cool. The most important is the fear factor. Your character is not some ordinary-game superhero. He gets scared just like any of us, and looking at monsters makes him freak out.
Secondly, there are no weapons. You can hit things with a hammer, but you won't be able to kill it. You can run, and you can hide.
Thirdly, you manually manipulate things like doors. The physics engine is awesome for that. Rather than just click-to-open a door, you have to drag it in a normal opening fashion.
There are some quirks, but that's ok. You need to edit the config file to enable saving (!), which I only just discovered by scrounging around the interwebs.
Also, it's made by a two (2!) man games company. And that in itself means you should go out and buy it immediately, because so much crap gets churned out by the industrial-game combines and you suck that up with glee.
There's also a second episode, Penumbra: Black Plague, but I'll have to finish the first one before I start on that.
interesting, I myself am playing Eternal Darkness right now, started playing last night
When was this game released? Is there Gore? Aweesoome~ finally a game that lets you open a door literally, i'm gonna spend hours playing with that. and.... one more question...i might feel ashamed to say this... is there any way to know if there is stock in my country (Singapore) yes, go ahead... laugh i'm asian...

It's only available through download, as far as I know.
I haven't played in very far, but there was an incident when a guy was dragged out of a room. You didn't see it, but you heard it, and then you go into the room with the blood stains - and you know that you have to go out there and face whatever it was that took him.
The first episode (Overture) was released a year ago. The second one (Black Plague) was released this month.
so... you can't kill ANY of these things? and your best bet is to run? Hammers do... stun... right?
Oh, i'll just try it... you got it off....

It is possible to kill something, but just as in real life, chances are it will kill you first.
I meant "it's only available through download" as in, you can't find a boxed copy, but you buy the game direct from the makers, or through Paradox Interactive for the second episode.
oh... okay... awkward~~~~
I spend too much time here

I have played this game it's loads of fun and really takes interactivity to a new level. By the way they do sell the game in boxed copies, I have seen them in my local Best Buy and on Amazon.
I just bought Penumbra: Black Plague from a bargain bin. Great game. Love the style, and effects. The graphics are not the best, but they're far from the worst either. The gameplay makes up for it and then some. Very creepy game, and well worth the time.
Nature's best screw up.

I've played the demo of Black Plague; great atmosphere, It's just not the type of game I could get into though.
