I've really been getting into the new Prey game, but I never did play the original.

Has anyone played both? What was the old one like, how does it differ from the new one?
Are the enemies (the shape shifting creatures) in both?

Just curious how the two compare.

The 2017 Prey and the original Prey have literally nothing in common with each other.

I mean that in the correct sense of the word as well. Literally 0 other than the name.

The original was a rather unique game that has some interesting ideas. Played a lot with portals and things like that.

So they were not created by the same company / publisher? Are they totally unrelated?

The original Prey (2006) was published by 2K and made by Human Head studios.

At some point the rights went to to Zenimax (who own's Bethesda) and they started working on Prey 2. The concept and premise looked amazing but it ultimately got canned which I'm still pissed about to this day.

Then Bethesda made the most recent game, apparently thought the name was good and since they owned the name just decided to use it. This resulted in lots of confusion since the games have literally nothing to do with each other (nor the cancelled Prey 2).

All of Bethesda's excuses for using the name "Prey" seem to amount to basically, "We couldn't be arsed to come up with something new, we own the Prey name so we just called it that so deal with it."

Basically it's an alternate history where JFK never died and the space race really took off.

There's a space station around the Moon, there's aliens, you shoot stuff.

It's essentially Bioshock in space. With aliens. And shapeshifting.

Honestly? I think the new Prey is leagues better than the original. Yes, the original did introduce some novel concepts and was a great tech demo, but as a standalone game, it was hardly revolutionary. Hell, it didn't even garner much attention until the announcement of the reboot.
