Well for single-player RPGs, Knights of the Old Republic (1) is my favourite. I would recommend it even if you don't like Star wars very much (more likely than not, you will by the time you've finished!). It is, in a word, awesome. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is also a very good single-player RPG, almost as good as KotOR in my estimation -- and because it uses a first-person-shooter-like interface, it will be easier for you to get used to as a first-timer.

The best part about these two is that they aren't set in fantasy Dungeons and Dragons lands of nonsense. VtM:BL is actually set in modern day Los Angeles, though obviously there are vampires in it (believable vampires, but vampires all the same).

For MMORPGs (which do not reach the same standard in my opinion, especially with lots of children running around screaming 'omg im 1337' to detract from any sort of immersion), Everquest 2 is my favourite, though even that doesn't exactly receive a lot of applause from me. World of Warcraft is OK for a laugh though, and Guild Wars is OK considering it does not have a monthly fee. Just don't buy Star Wars Galaxies and you should be OK with whatever choice you make.

You can't play RPGs without trying Baldur's Gate 2 or Diablo 2 or Neverwinter Nights.

diablo 2 and its exp is my all time favourite rpg. although the graphics are extremely outdated, i never get bored of it. i always end up returning to it. so if you're looking for a cheap RPG, diablo 2 is quite a good choice. if u're looking for online then GW is pretty good. strategic etc. very balanced with a good community and developers that frequently updates and also it has no monthly fees. GW is suited for the hardcore gamer or occasional (i reckon) cause theres not alotta grinding and u dont need to spend hundreds of hours on it levelling up.

fr0zenwith a good community

A good community?! Maybe when you only ever interact with your guild. But have you been into a town recently? The only talking is spamming, those that do talk tend to talk in 1337 or txt speak, your average group consists of several obnoxious people with no social skills and a few people who seem to leave the group halfway through a mission intentionally, and newbies' questions go completely unanswered. The Guild Wars community is even worse than the World of Warcraft community, and that's saying something.

And Diablo 2 is most certainly not a 'role playing game'; it's just a hack 'n slash game.

Amen.

And if your mindset is too narrow to truly appreciate RPGs, consider Fallout, the post-Apocalyptic cousin of Baldur's Gate. Bloodlines, IMNSHO, was a letdown compared to the game on which it is based.

The Baldurs Gate/Neverwinter Night series is definatly not for beginners, it requires some knowledge to the D&D system since its in theory based open it (I know the story line goes on ForgottenRealms although thats a part of D&D).

sorry i havent been to town recently but when i first started guildwars, the community WAS good. didn't know it was that bad now.

ok i apologise. i'll rephrase. diablo 2 ISNT a role playing game but a hack and slash game but i do consider diablo 2 as a RPG even though its hack 'n slash.

I iked NWN, but I stopped playing it, don't know why. I liked the system, but I didn't like the Graphics, or sound, plus it lagged a lot on my computer. I would Recommend The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, excellent Game, even better with mods.
