Oh, awesome.

Been following S2HD for a while now. As always with community projects its beseiged with delays and political fighting both online and real life.

ANYWAY ALPHA RELEASE *squeels*

That actually looks interesting. I'm somewhat surprised SEGA hasn't tried to shut it down yet, though.

Oh, Sega are normally quite cool with fan projects as long as its not-for-profit.

Sonic Retro are the community that are developing it, Sonic's brand manager is a member there and fully aware of the project. Infact I think Sega (of America)'s own blog plugged it. :)

They even went so far as to get Christian Whitehead (Taxman) - who contributed to this and other fan projects, to do the Sonic CD port released on XBLA / PSN last year.

Not a bad company, Sega.

I wish that Sonic 4: Episode 1 had looked as good as this fan project!

(Still have a game boner for Sonic 2 HD! :D )

IMO episode I did look as good for the most part, it just played like utter rubbish.

Episode II on the other hand looks a lot more promising.

There was a fan project done in the vein of Sonic 4 before it came out. Looked pretty cool, but I don't think they ever got past what initial footage they released. Looked really promising.

Antilles is right about Sega with respect to its fan base, they're pretty lax when it comes to fan projects, at least compared to some other companies. Tolkein Estates filed a cease-and-desist order against "The Middle Earth Project", a total conversion for Morrowind way back when. Coincidentally I believe this was about the time an EA-developed LOTR game was about to come out.

I'm downloading the alpha of this to see what they did with it. Looks good. Note you might get an anti-virus alert when downloading the file, as the site warns.

Say what? :p

Anyway, I tried S2HD, I was a bit dissapointed in respect of the fact that, firstly, it set my antivirus off due to the level of DRM one unfortunate team member has decided to pack the game in.

Secondly the same programmer has done a bit of a wank job with the engine. It won't fullscreen on any resolution below 1080p - which is a bit annoying.

Also it's taken 5 years just to get this. I give up hope myself.

Ach, sorry, that's what I get for posting late at night when I should've been asleep. I haven't had a chance to try it... but that's both amusing and sad one of them would dump DRM in there.

Hopefully being 'alpha' means they'll change it, but I'd imagine this is more disappointing towards those who had actively followed it during its life-cycle. Here's hoping that Black Mesa, if it ever comes out, won't illicit the same response.

If the rest of the S2HD team have sense they'll let this programmer go and get a new one in on the project.
