Hi everyone. This is my first post here, so sorry if it is the wrong place.
I recently found my copy of Tachyon: The Fringe, and completed both campaigns (Bora and Galspan), but am now at a loss, because I don't want to play it again so soon, but realised what a brilliant and absorbing game it is. It really sucks you in, and I was so happy when Jake got home safely at the end (omg how weird!!!!)
So I am looking for a space sim, with a similar concept (pick and choose allegiances, ships, upgrades, jobs etc), that has a really absorbing storyline, and will make me cry at the end.... :bawl::bawl::bawl:
I have a nasty feeling there won't be anything that fulfils all my criteria...
Why? Cause normal is boring.

The Privateer series and Freelancer have you playing as a mercenary, so that's pretty close. I can't vouch for the X series, but from what I've heard, they should do the job.

Starlancer is my personal favourite so far as realistic space sims go (if there is such a thing). You can pick and choose your ships and weapon loadouts, and the storyline is the most engaging of all. However, you can't choose allegiences in that though, and it has some issues with Windows XP.
Failing that, Jose's recommendations will see you through. I heard of an Elite 4 in the works, but I'm sure that's just rumour. And it would take a while anyway.
Do you know Eve Online ? it's a great game. Also if you like a simulation of Mars's base, have a look at : ufo : Afterlight
Is this the Privateer you meant?
Edit: I think Freelancer is the winner at this point...

I had a look at EVE, but I don't want to have to pay subscription fees for online games, so that was a no.
