Random Idea but post info about the game here.
(Note to Gizmo: Please dont delete this thread, comparied to other STO forums this ones a lifeless Romulan).
The primary gameplay area will be the Beta Quadrant, the section of the galaxy that includes territory of the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans among others. Other areas of the Galaxy will be opened up via game expansions. Players will have considerable freedom to travel, explore space and discover the unknown. Futhermore, players will be able to visit, explore, and engage in problem solving and combat on planets throughout the Galaxy.

From the STO Wikki
ST:O will have an economy system. Even though currency is rudimentary in the Star Trek Universe, there is a barter system. Perpetual's Eric Heimburg also stated: "Even if the game had no currency, players would simply set up a barter system. The history of MMOs shows that players will create their own economy if the game's systems don't suit their purposes." The game-currency will consist of Federation credits. In addition, latinum bars and Cardassian leks could be converted to credits for a fee.
To be consistent with Star Trek, simple equipment like Uniforms, food, lodging, simple entertainments and standard equipment are given freely to the player. If a player buys something, it's something special, not the usual items that can be had at any replicator. Luxury items
Aside from simple equipment, players will have the option to buy alien artifacts, holo-suite time at non-Federation establishments (think of Quark's bar for example) or bribe a Ferengi to get the inside scoop on a cargo shipment due in this afternoon (think of Quark again for example). Star ships
Federation credits however will only give a player limited barter-capabilities. It will not be possible to obtain a Federation starship commission. On the other hand, becoming a Captain will take time and accomplishments during missions. An exemplary display of leadership during missions will yield prestige, in addition of XP. This prestige will in turn be used to 'buy' or rather obtain ship upgrades, special equipment such as a new advanced tricorder or obtain a starship commission. I'm not sure if I have interpreted the devlog correctly but owning a starship does not make you Captain. Becoming a Captain will be a daunting and elaborate task. Gettting promoted will not be easy to ensure a limited amount of Player controlled ships.
