Steam In-Home Streaming

wBzEnN1.gif

Trying it in a sec, little lappy's updating Steam...

Just tried it out with Just Cause 2 and New Vegas. Mine's a bit jittery (probably because I have a cheap ass router) but other than that it's fine. It's....rather odd seeing such shiny graphics on this laptop. The most it can usually manage is pre-2006 or so games.

I don't really see the appeal in this for most games, honestly. People fork out hundreds for high-speed gaming peripherals and low-latency monitors... But we're expected to game over a network?

Expected to? No.

Sometimes lazy and wanna stay in bed? Prefer Mac or Linux, but still want to game without swapping over to your Windows machine? Want to play on the TV without lugging your tower out?

Yes.

EDIT: I see what you were getting at now. Yeah, hardcore gamers definitely shouldn't use it for multiplayer games. They would get murdered. I got around 70ms delay with my router. It's a POS though, I imagine that could be brought down pretty low. Some threads on it are reporting as low as 2ms, which is negligible.

The biggest problem that I've experienced is screen resolution. It gets a bit wonky and sometimes I end up with giant black bars everywhere.

EDIT2: Your client actually matters a lot, it seems. People got lag similar to me when using netbooks (as I was using). They swapped to better machines and it was fine. I'll have to try my actually good laptop later.

Sweet, I was wondering if I could use a netbook xD

But yeah, I imagine you get the same lag in SP that you'd get on a half-decent MP connection. Still, not a terrible price to pay for mobility.

Maybe I'll try it the next time I have friends over. My desktop is a beast, but my laptop doesn't quite keep up with their alienwares (It wasn't meant to, it does a lot more as it is than I expected for the price).

Other than that, I can't imagine when I'd want to sit down and game but not be in my room at my desk.

I don't know how often I'm going to use this in real life but I've had a lot of fun streaming games while in bed last night / this morning.

Perhaps it's a novelty since there's not a lot of point in being able to mobile game when you can't leave the house with it. Perhaps it'll work in the garden on a sunny day or something. But yeah, neat all the same.
