I dont know whether this actually does belong in this part of the forum or the "General Discussion" portion so if it needs to be it shall be moved by someone in charge here.

Anyway, over the past fews years of gaming one can see, hear, and listen to gamers using the term "noob". Essentially meaning someone who's new to a game or gaming in general it can also be used to offend people of lesser skill then others (not like anyone in here actually needed me to define the word).

So, why am I writing this thread then? Well, it's gotten to the point where "noob" is downright annoying. Everywhere you look playing on your Xbox Live, or during a session of WoW or any other online gaming thing there's people using "noob"....now is it just me or are the people using it sound like idiots? Seriously, anyone who uses it sounds like they may have taken a blow to the head with a tire iron when they were six by their drunken uncle Fred at the family reunion b/c he thought you were a rabid raccoon trying to take his soul and his beer...I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CANT ACTUALLY USE WORDS AND INSTEAD USE STUPID GAME LINGO!

Does anyone else out there feel the same way? Is anyone tired of these stupid little online gaming words that make no sense and are just annoying to the point where the guy re-typing them over and over again into the messege box of Call of Duty 2 server becomes your number one most desired person to disembowl?

Red Rebel;3502634Like when every time someone dies, they call someone a noob. That's annoying. I don't think the word should be used seriously any more.

:agreed

It's gotten to the point where most people use it as a joke. Those that are serious about it, should be avoided.

EDIT: Supposed to be below Red Rebel's post.

I actually think "noob" is funny, especially when you call your friends in real life that (I call a few "nooblet", some "nub"). But in excess, it does get annoying. Like when every time someone dies, they call someone a noob. That's annoying. I don't think the word should be used seriously any more. When I use it, I'm joking around. It shouldn't be used with any seriousness behind it.

Also just to be clear:

newb: Someone who is new at something. Generally non-dreogatory. noob/nub: Someone acting like a moron who knows better. Always derogatory, unless the person using it doens't know the difference between "newb" and "noob".

"Noob" has come to mean anything of the following:

  • Newbie
  • Person you were killed by
  • Person you find annoying
  • Person you disagree with
  • Members of the team loosing (except the person calling their teammates noobs, of course)
  • GENERAL INSULT USED BY PEEPZ WHO TLK LIKE THIS LOL!!!
  • Something you say to make yourself sound pro/1337.
  • Person who is winning by miles because they are using a method you aren't skilled enough to use (eg a jet in BF2)
  • Anyone using an annoying method of killing too much (eg hand grenades in BF2), and winning because of it
  • People with a higher ping than you

I think that's about it. Feel free to add to the list.

Well, at christmas, I called one of my friends who was temping there a newb for a whole week.

She took it quite lightly, then she left to go back to uni.

I'm tired of the word, I'm tired of the 12 year olds who use it every other fucking second. In other words, the majority of the population of XBL and CounterStrike. No offence intended to any 12 year olds here (if any?)... :p

Not according to the COPPA agreement. ;)

It gets annoying after a while, but for the most part, I really don't care.

I like that one - i've seen it myself...props to you

While the use of the word itself annoys me alot for the most part I'm even more annoyed when people cant speak english while using it and just end up producing a string of letters and non offical abbrevations of words that dont need to be abbreviated...that is what IS the most moronic thing ever

Ironically, I only use the term online to refer to people who think they're skilled, you know the type, the big clan logo, -]{)Heylookatmei'mbetterthanyou(}[- kind of thing, and the ones who overestimate themselves.

Using the term outside of the internet has just never come up for me, I prefer explaining things better in reality than I do in-game, or online.
