... With a copy of Left 4 Dead 2.

In addition to restoring players' access to the game, Valve is giving players a copy of Left 4 Dead 2 and one to gift to a friend, along with an explanation of how even players exhibiting good behavior were hit with the banhammer.

Where did the old "It was an accident, deal with it" attitude go?

That's pretty awesome of them. I doubt any other companies would have done something like that.

I wish I was banned, I could send that copy to a friend so I can play it with someone I actually know.

Why were they banned in the first place?

I doubt Valve will reveal that, and with good reason. VAC is their jewel. According to themselves, VAC works completely autonomously, only requiring human input in cases like this. It's a good system, as it prevents unjustified bans from abusive employees. This case is likely the same as the previous two or three cases; a file is mistaken for a cheat and VAC goes on a banning spree.

At least read the link. It was explained by none other than Gabe Newell himself:

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game.

Glad I boycotted steam ages ago. The software has too much reach.

Steam is the one thing i would not boycott these days. Valve seem to be one of the only companies that actually care about their customers.
