Alright so I found this Sega Genesis 32X at a thrift store for $6 and was wondering if it played regular Sega games or if it had its own format and cartriges. Thanks! P.S. Good Deal? Yes or No

It's a Sega with a 32-bit processor. Depending on which one you have (think they had three) it plays 32X cartridges and CD's, all Sega CD's, and all Genesis cartridges. As for a good deal, if you have alot of old Sega games and love those old Sega games, sure, why not?

As for forum, I move this to The Console Forum!

The 32x, many say is the start of the downfall of Sega in the console industry.

Sega are riding on a high, after the huge boom of the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive in every market, showing Nintendo who's what with Sonic the Hedgehog. The 32bit race starts to emerge, with Sony Computer Entertainment and the Playstation just round the corner.

Sega of America decide that, rather than put the Sega Genesis to waste, they would attempt to corner the 32bit console market early much as they did with the Mega Drive / Genesis, by "Upgrading" the Genesis. The result was the 32x. A module you attach to your exsisting Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.

The 32x added the 32bit prosessing power to the Genesis, however the limitations of the main Genesis hardware could not entirely be overcome. The 32x was a letdown in all areas, and, ultimately, the system flopped like a wet trout.

Sega further shot themselves in their own foot by having Sega of Japan simultaniously work on the Sega Saturn. The Saturn in the end was the under dog to Playstation for many reasons, not least because of budget problems. The 32x was ignored as everyone simply antisipated the Saturn, and by the time the Saturn was releasd, Sega already had a big fail light with the 32x, trying to enter the 32bit domain.

So unless your a hardcore Sega fanatic, or, a Sonic everything and you MUST have a copy of Knuckles Chaotix, I would step away.
