Perhaps this should be in the Melee, but i'd rather it stay in here as it is related to gaming. This is mostly aimed at any producer of games, particularaly First person shooters. I really don't have a LOT of time to play games because I work and go to college at the same time, and have to fit in 3 hours a day for GF moderation also. When I do get a chance to play any games on my PC it's usually taken :) Most of the games I play are first person shooters, but sometimes i'll crank out the odd RTS/RPG. Lately I have noticed how the standard of First Person Shooters has become absolutley pathetic. I don't say that freely, usually I don't rant or vent about games, but just these last few months I have found the quality of most FPS games to be downright Appalling. Going back to about April 04' was about the last time I experienced a great FPS game. that game was Farcry. Sure, it had its problems, and for a while there I hated it because the graphics, to me, looked "cartoonish" but now I have gotten past that and the game is great. Farcry was good because it had a combination of aspect's of what new age FPS game should have to make them great. What I mean by "Aspects" is fairly basic... *Physics *AI *Good Graphics *Ragdolls *Special effects *Choice/no linealality (You don't follow a path) *Great storyline (Farcry's was shockingly bad  ) *Emersive gameplay. You have that "Feel" when you play. Every gamer knows what I mean here. *Sound *Great gameplay. There are ton's of other aspects which make these games great these days but those are the major's anyway. Ok, so by now you're probably wondering "Alright...What's this guy on about". Well my point is that the majority of game developers these days (In my opinion) are money hungry, good for nothing time wasters. I'm not saying all the developers are, just a large majority keep pumping out these pathetic, pointless games which are in no way more advanced than the last. In fact, a lot of these games are WORSE than some old FPS's I know of. Lets review a bit. Here a few FPS games I have played in the last few months which i'm extremely dissapointed with. Men of Valor: Men of Valor is a game based back in the vietnam war. Your in a squad of soldiers dispatched to complete a number of missions. When I started playing this game I couldn't believe how bad this game was. The ONLY thing I liked about it was the fact the soldiers could swear, including "F" words etc. (A) The first thing I noticed that really annoyed me, was the inability to "jump". WHAT good FPS doesn't allow you to jump!? (B) The second thing I noticed about this game that really had me flaming was the shooting/killing. Everything in this area was EXTREMELY basic. You shoot a guy, a bit of pathetic looking blood splashes out and thats it. No bullet wounds. No gore. No physics/ragdolls. Not even a scripted, animated death. And this was with every enemy you killed. You lob a grenade right beside a guy's foot, it explodes and he stifly falls to the ground making a noise of some sort that resembles groaning. (C) I guess I can skip the fact that the game has NONE of the major components required these days to make a mind blowing FPS such as physics/Ragdolls/Gore/Special effects, as I stated when you apparently kill an enemy. (D) This is perhaps the worst AI I have seen in a FPS in a long while. It seems that even on hard difficulty, your enemies have two choices. Stand there and take the heat, or charge at you. Others may argue here, but I think it was crap. Honestly, the game engine here can't be too more advanced than Shareware doom! (E) Theres a lot of other things about this particular game that I would like to go on about but it will take too long. Just imagine gameplay, game build, graphics etc, all extremely bad. You have MOV in a nutshell. It's not just Men of valor that has me REALY agitated. Here's a list of games I think are utter rubbish... * Men Of Valor * Doom 3 * Chrome * Dead mans hand When are these game developers going to learn people are going to get sick of buying into crap, and start making descent games? I personally think HL1 STILL pwns MOV/chrome/dead mans hand, hands down (No pun intended) I was particularaly dissapointed Doom3. I almost anticipated this game as much as Half-life 2, my most awaited game ever. I was looking foward to Doom3 so much, but after a while playing, found it was one of the most pathetic pieces of work I had played for a long time. I didn't live up to even the slightest bit of hype. Why? Id are another one of those developers after your money just like EA Games where they mass produce and pump out bad games. Well, thats what I think anyway. I could go on about how bad Doom3 was with not having any real physics engine, good graphics but covered up by a lot of shadow to block out all the crap, no gore etc, but I would have to create a new thread. My point? I'm sick and tired of these pathetic developers trying to sell us pathetic games, which have gone back two steps in the gaming world rather than taken a few foward. They need to learn to created what the gamers want, and not create badly designed games to try and make money. I don't know how many of you can agree with me here, but this is all just my opinion.

most FPS games that are developed are based on multiplay. but since traditionally, you can't sell a game for multiplayers only, they have to include a single player campaign. since that is not the main focus of the development process, the campaigns are often bad.

I totallt agree, but I think besides the fact that valve delayed hl2 for so long and all the other bullshit weve had to put up with, from the looks of it hl2 is gonna blow all fps out of the water for a long time to come. If they dissapoint im pretty much gonna blow my head of with a 12 guage.

Actually most developers only start making a game great after they sell it, that is they make patchs to make games that they sold to be better instead of fixing all the problems in v1.0. Take BFV for example. So yes most developers are greedy, but then they only come to realise that they didn't do such a good job much later. But to be honest, I sometimes might think its the other way round: Some people are too unforgiving when it comes to games.
