Medieval 2 boasted that yet again you could have even more NPCs on the field of battle at once but I really didnt notice much of this at all...it seemed the same amount as with Rome...(around at the most 1,500 for each side w/o reinforcements).
Even though this is a lot of NPCs I still dont feel the full power of what these games are trying to accomplish. For instance a typical Roman Legion would consist of over 5,000 men...obviously the slow down from that many NPCs going at once would be amazingly bad but hey...it would a) seem more realistic and b) get rid of that smallness feeling I get while playing the game...it just doesnt seem so epic when you besiege a city and your force of 1,500 looks a little small compared to the enemy town...aka lots of space on the map left...I just dont get that epic feeling that you're meant too
I agree, it would be much more satisfying to have 9283650934659236452560234560238560235 men kicking the crap out of each other, but right now most computers cannot handle that. I used to have a 256mb graphics card and 1.5 gigs of ram and i lagged during the fights in medeival two. And most people don't even have that. As the hardware becomes more advanced I have no doubts we will be seeing battles on the scale that I know all of us are craving.

I entered this thread expecting a very different kind of discussion. :D
I too long for the days when real time strategies reflect a realistic number of men on the battlefield, along with more realistic scaling and combat for that matter. Unfortunately, as NeverEndingBattle said, your average Joe's Dell isn't going to cope with that sort of thing for the foreseeable future.
Yeah - too bad though...I want that NOW...lol Just for fun I tried sieging a city with something like 5,000 men at the same time but I forgot that they just wait outside the battle map until you loss enough men so that they can enter....so retarded...
what's funny is that on the Rome:TW box they show a battle on epic proportions taking place...yet theres no way you could ever have that many men on the field EVER in this game
You can get alot more, try making instant battles, and place in as many sides as you can, and place the largest units in the game, you can have around 20,000 units going at it.
My computer can handle 2,000 or so with max settings and get a decent fps, at 20,000, I get about 0.5 FPS, but still, It's only going to get better with time.
