This is coming out soon (preload is available for those who've already bought it)- it's the most recent entry in a series of spacesims by a German developer, Egosoft.

some nerds nerding out about it

The series have been all sandbox space sims, with an emphasis on economic management. The game world is completely dynamic, with mostly anything able to be destroyed. Previous installments have had a reputation for a steep learning curve and half-assed missions, but the games can be quite immersive if you are interested in this genre. Modding is pretty active in this community too.

The developer is going for a different model this time, having only one ship for the player (while they can control other ships), similar to the early X Beyond the Frontier, though it has been polarizing among the fanbase. Having a customizable ship is also similar to the concept behind a space sim from a few years back, Darkstar One, though it didn't make much of a splash.

I love space sims- if I had time and money to burn I'd've definitely bought this. Egosoft makes pretty fun games, though they have problems and bugs- making convincing NPC models and animations haven't been a strong suit of theirs as you may see in the videos above, but they are really good with making nice environments.

Being stuck to one ship is a deal breaker, imo. I'll be sticking to X3, which I've still got many, many hours to go before I get permanently bored of. It takes a lot to sell me a new game, especially when there are perfectly good previous versions I can buy cheaply or already own, and this game just doesn't have anything particularly exciting to offer in comparison to previous games. Definitely nothing to offset the (imo) poor decision in regards to ship choice.

(Surprised not to see a Freelancer mention here where you mention Darkstar One)

It's a bit of a trade off. On the one hand they've reworked a lot of the interface, (which has always been atrocious in the X games,) and dogfight mechanics and so on. And pathfinding should be better this time around. On the other hand, yeah, fewer ships.

Part of that may just be due to the fact that they're modelling a cockpit in a reasonable degree of detail, but I feel a lot of it's probably due to the fact that they've just never ever ever done capital ships well.

With StarCitizen and Elite looking to run out in the near to mid-term future I don't know how this is going to do.

While in Freelancer you were limited to flying a single ship, you could buy ships and change them (otherwise we'd've been stuck in that crappy beginner ship!). To the best of my knowledge X: Rebirth limits you to the same ship you can customize any which way you want. That reminds me more of Darkstar One than Freelancer.

Freelancer is more equivalent to the other x games.

As for the fully modeled cockpit... Yay? I really don't think that's enough of a game element to warrant removing something that's always been a staple of the x series.

The guys making this game live not so far from here. It isn't a very big company, so obviously there will be some limitations as to what they can do, but in my opinion this looks very impressive for something produced by a smaller studio.

If you dislike having to play the same game over and over with Call of Duty X and Battlefield Y you might want to support these smaller devs before they starve.

I especially like the idea of having a living world where every action matters to some degree. And Star Citizen is at least one year away.

D3matt;5718274Freelancer is more equivalent to the other x games.

I was referring to the game choice of being restricted to one ship and being able to modify said ship in different ways. This is what Darkstar one did- though X Beyond the Frontier also limited the player to the same ship (Xperimental Shuttle) it wasn't customizable in the same way they're pitching this one, if they are honest about it.

There is a common theme of open exploration, but the economy in X takes a much larger precedence than Freelancer, which was static though with different prices depending on location. Combat in Freelancer was usually easier to do, I think ships in X are harder to handle and it's much more difficult to be a 100% fighter in X the same way one could in Freelancer. Ship modification in Freelancer was limited to shields and thrusters, with the rest being weapons mounts.

X has been compared to a single-player version of EVE, which would be more accurate at least with the economic emphasis both take.

IMO the Star Citizen game would probably be more in line of a Freelancer-type game, or at least the way Chris Roberts wanted Freelancer to be.

Looking at metacritic, the official reviews haven't been put up but user ratings are really trashing the game.

X Rebirth for PC Reviews - Metacritic

I can't tell if it's just angry fans over the design decisions (changes from previous games, single ship, apparently console oriented UI), but I am also getting the impression that it has many bugs and what not which indicates an unstable release. There is also Egosoft's usual issues with NPCs and the plot structure. The Egosoft forums show the same things, lots of anger over the state of the game even looking beyond the expected differences that would come up with how different the game would be, especially with how long this has been in development.

I guess I'm staying away for sometime then. :/
