I'm a first-time modder who is looking for programs to let me create a brand-new ship from scratch (or maybe a whole fleet of them). I know I need Storm 3D, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding the damned thing. Any help would be useful!
Firstly you'll need a modelling utility of which there are a couple of regularly used ones:
1) Milkshape 3d. Inexpensive at only $20 to register it. Its also highly suited to lower poly model construction (which is what most modellers aim for when working with Armada). Do a search for Chumbalum Software using www.google.com and you'll soon come across it. the download is you won't be able to convert models to SOD an exporter that was made not to long ago (can't remember the name right now).
2) 3D Max studio. Professionally created 3d modelling software made by Descreet. Although quite difficult to use its most necessary for converting (without any problems) to Armada's SOD format. Biggest draw back is that 3dmax is upwards of $4000, so it might be best to find someone who has it who can help you.
Secondly you'll need an art package which can recognise, load and save Truevision tarGA (TGA file extension) image files. Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro are most used for this purpose.
Thanks Major. I'll look for those things. Gotta say, though, that I'm glad it's you who replied. I'm kind of a fan of your Armada I and II work, and have several of your creations on my hard drive. Anywho, thanks!
You can get Storm3D here -
BTW, we're all fans of the Major!! :D
OK, I got Storm 3d. Anybody got a copy of 3D Max that's just taking up space on their desk they'd be willing to part with for, say, $200? (LOL) If anyone knows where to get a cheap, cheap copy of 3D Max Studio (for $300 or less), PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Or, if they're willing to lend me a copy, that'd work, too.
I would suggest being very careful about talking the topic WAREZ, as it may be a very sensitive subject on a public forum which the developers of the said software may come across. Personally I think the best thing would be to find someone who already has it to convert your models for it. At least that way you can avert any problems caused through having a non-legal copy of it.
yes i thought better of that map ;) but if son of vegeta needs some converting, i will do it for him ;)
I would be very happy if you would convert the Milkshape 3d model i've whipped up in the (um..) twelve hours since I first posted this thing, voyager009. And could you give me some tips on the whole Photoshop mapping or whatever for the ship's skin? I'm trying to figure it out, but to no avail. I'm using Photoshop 6.0.
PS-ATTN various software developers who make cool software like 3D Max Studio. Please disregard any comments I made about getting a cheap copy. I meant no offense, nor did I intend any reference to, shall we say, slightly less-than-legal versions of your software. I am completely against illegal copies of software, and believe that everyone should get full credit (and royalties) for all their hard work. Believe me, it's happened to me plenty of times (where people steal stuff from you and you get no credit for it). I am merely a poor, destitute, and completely broke college student.
OK I've got the finalized wireframe done for my first ship. I've also borrowed a copy of 3D Max Studio R3.1 from a buddy of mine (thank God for computer graphics majors!), and have my wireframe set up in .MAX format. How do I go about setting up hardpoints, engine glow, and the ship's skin? (I've got Photoshop 6.0)
ok, ill do them for u, send them to me firstname.lastname@example.org
