I posted this back a few months after Armada 2 came out, but no one was interested, maybe some would be now:

Traders:

The traders would be an add-on race for Armada 2. I don’t know about the rest of the community but I’m tired of these same multi-player games, they are all are pretty much the same, a race at the beginning to build up resources and fleets, then major assaults on each other. But it’s not very fun anymore and it’s not very realistic.

So….

We add another race, one that just collects, and transports resources to teammates.

We would also need new maps, that limit resources for all players except the traders.

This race would have to provide the dilithium, metal, etc. to their teammates so they can build up their fleets. The teammates would also have to help protect the convoys of cargo vessels. Opposing teams would of course want to attack enemy convoys, and more importantly capture them.

For example in a 4 player game (would be the minimum # of players required to play)

2 teams: each one has a trading partner. The map is layed out very large, but most all the resources are in two area’s, possibly protected by asteroid belts. Very limited resources elsewere. The two trading players start the game at those locations and mine the resources. (there would be lots, and lots of resources available there) They and their teammates would have to build up defenses around the resource area’s.

The “regular” races would have very limited resource processing abilities, there miners would take much longer to mine the limited resources available in the other parts of the maps.

I think all of this would help create some new, interesting gameplay with new strategies. The traders would have virtually no offensive ships or weapons, all of their stuff is defensive but would be quite powerful, so that they can’t be wiped out easily.

Starbase- A heavily armed station with multiple docking ports for latinum miners. Maybe even an integrated one that has the Trading station built in as well, I’m not sure.

Mining Station: For mining dilithium, most likely would be able to unload faster.

Orbiting Metal station: for mining metal from planets

Shipyard: Builds light ships, shuttle type ships for defending convoys

Cargo Vessel Shipyard: Builds Cargo Vessels

Research Facility: Researches more advanced cargo ships and mining technologies. Such as cloaking cargo ships and cargo vessels with faster engines/warp/maybe slipstream/etc.

Turrents: Very heavily armed turrents, one Trader’s turrent equal to 3 normal turrents.

Trading Station: a nice large trading station with defensive weapons.

Salvage station: kind of like the borg recycler, can take salvaged ships and turn them into resources.

Ships:

Construction vessel

Cargo Vessels: half a dozen or more classes of cargo vessels slowly available from researching them. Such as cloak, slipstream drive, faster engines, larger capacities, weapons, etc.

Escort Ships: A few classes of escort vessels, such as runabout type ships, just light escorts, but deadly in large swarms protecting a convoy, but not useful for fighting offensively.

No larger class attack/battleships.

Possibly some salvage ships for salvaging enemy ships, with the Iwo Jima’s attack and board weapons. So that you can act a little like pirates as well.

There’s more, I just can’t think of it right now.

Probably also mess with the other races some more eventually, add new ships, stations, but mainly use existing stuff.

Sounds like a good idea. I was wondering about the military side as they will need to protect their bases and convoys. You could have one large ship. It could be for defending convoys only and have special weapons that reflect this like the shield remodulation wave and a holo projector from the shadow class. Some cargo ships could have the incursion holo emitter. I was thinking about a large cargo ship with defensive special weapons and a large, large cargo hold.

yeah, my thoughts exactly. but it would also have to be somewhat balanced, larger cargo hold and special weapons, but would probably have to be slower.

smaller cargo hold but faster engines, etc.

I've started modifying the feds into the Traders, just using standard models now but eventually that stuff can be changed to more original designs.

Turning the Trading Station into a starbase for now, with construction, and weapons.

I also have been fooling around in max on some cargo ship designs but i have no idea how to turn them into sods with proper texturing and everything, some help on that would be good.

here's something from months ago for another project, i might use the fighter and/or the cargo ship (yeah, very simple design) in the mod, if i can figure out how to convert them, i'll need quite a few designs of freighters.

if anyone knows of any cool freighter designs or models let me know.

I also think i want to put in a heavy "pirate" part of the Traders race, capturing enemy ships will be cool

Also, I don't know if it will work or not, but can something like a mining beam, etc, be used by a pirate/raiding ship to transfer the enemy ships cargo? like dilithium or latinum, whatever. That way an enemy cargo ship doesn't nessassarily have to be captured, just "raided" This could be one of the advanced ships or special weapons.

How about a cargo ship that has a small cargo hold but can dock with cargo containers or small cargo vessels to increase the cargo hold. It could have 2 cargo containers or small cargo vessels to start with and can dock with 4 other containers to increase the hold. The containers could be built at the starbase. This ship would have to be big, have strong shields and its speed would decrease every time it docked with a container.

This would have to be a fusing special weapon but it wouldn't be able to seperate with the containers.

You could use the anteries class freighters if you wanted a cannon ship. i even have drawings if your interested. i think the anteries is 'neutral' as far as ships go but is slightly federation like.

P.S. this sounds realy good. at last something that adds tactics to the game! although it will need a very complex ai to use it in single player (i hope a single play version is made as my modem is to slow for multiplayer).
