Why do you, dear reader, drink beer? Is it just a social thing, where if you actually wanted to get drunk, you would opt for something stronger? I've never actually "gone out" to drink.

I've had it a few times, but it gives me volcanic gas long before I feel at all inebriated. Is that just me?

Beer is what I started to drink with, and it goes amazingly well with pizza. The place where I had my first (and 2nd-5th) beer is a pizza place in downtown Charleston with a fairly extensive beer menu. I got to try a typical hoppy beer, a stout, a nut brown, a white, and some kind of fruit beer, and I guess beer has just stuck with me. Yeah, it can give me some gas and it definitely makes me have to visit the bathroom a few times on a good night, but it's still good. A few places have some nice over 10% stouts, too, which are great.

Wine, on the other hand, I've always found either too sharp or just personally unpleasant, and the social situation isn't there to casually have something harder besides sake or margaritas on occasion. There's a local place that has half priced bottles a couple times a week, so if my work peers go there I'll go ahead and have some wine. Rarely otherwise.

I don't go out to get drunk, but I've taken Irish car bombs and vodka shots and shots with stupid names like buttery nipples, but I only really do these things on the rare occasion I'm with my more bro-ish friends (chuggin') or with ladies (shots and mixed drinks). Even in these occasions I'm not looking to get smashed, but certainly, they taste good. Used to get milkshakes with Southern Comfort at a "dessert bar"/coffee shop semi-regularly my last year in college.

Did I answer the question? Felt like I rambled.

I don't drink Beer. I don't like it. Never have. I don't like Lager or Ale either, and am very fussy when it comes to Cider (the one common beverage that I do drink). I'll only drink the fruit Cider; ones that don't consist of Apple or Pear.

That and the Mixers. I only drink socially too. A few years back now, I'd go out into town every other weekend and get on the drink. These days, alcohol is reserved for specific occasions (birthdays, new years eve, a big night out) ect. I wont just go out and get drunk anymore, I don't see the point in doing it all the time.

When I had my first drink it was a mixed drink. If I'm really going to drink I prefer liquer (Grey Goose, Captain Morgan, etc) over beer. I'll of course drink beer on the rare occasions that I do drink but I always feel as if beer is going to make me vomit if I drink to much of it where as I don't have that issue with liquer.

@Vantage - what good pizza places are down in Charleston? Haven't been down there in a while but I'm only about 4 hours from there.

Vantage, I too find wine...terrible. I will say pizza and beer go great, I do do that every now and then.

Taste and culture, mostly.

Beer is also a better social drink as you don't get totally plastered if you keep drinking over the course of an evening.

^ This.

I like beer and I enjoy sitting back on a nice day and sipping on a beer or two while I fire up the old BBQ. If I want to get drunk quick I'll drink whiskey, but with beer you can maintain a solid buzz over a longer period without getting absolutely trashed.

What pushes me away from drinking beer on a more regular basis is having to deal with the empties. I'm usually too lazy to return the bottles and let them pile up until they're a nuisance, at which point I begrudgingly return them. I don't mind drinking wine as it can go so well with food, but I prefer red wine over white and I always seem to lean towards buying French wine.
