On January 4 2010 Burj Khalifa was opened in Dubai, after being in construction since September 2004.

At an impressive 828m tall, this tower is the tallest freestanding structure in the world, approximately 300m taller than the previous record holder, the CN tower.

It has broken many records, including world's highest swimming pool, world's highest mosque and most floors in a building. However, coming at a cost of $1.5bn, was it worth it? The tower has been built as part of a new "Downtown Dubai", which will cost an estimated $20bn, intended to make the most of the recent boom that Dubai has been experiencing.

But what happens when the money dries up, and the oil runs out? Well, for now, there's a pretty tower to look at, but with office space priced at $43,000 per square metre, is it really going to be filled up, as the number of jobs available in Dubai falls rapidly, and the wealthy and successful leave for home after living the dream?

I agree, it's a fantastic place, I'd love to visit, but I don't think student life will leave me enough money to actually go through with it.

Um, isn't Dubai's real estate market falling like a rock?

Maybe not the best investment?

Yep, rocketing downwards. Which leaves me wondering what it's gonna be like afterwards, when the only people who live there can't afford space in these huge expensive buildings, it will be like an 800m tall ghost town.

When they started this project it was rocketing skywards with no sign of stopping...

Guess their future vision didn't work

When they run out of oil the building will probably collapses after a decade or so of disuse and disrepair.

I mean I hate to say it really, as it is an awesome feat of engineering, and would be awesome to visit. However it just isn't going to last, I fear.
