(Vikram_126763): "Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support. My name is Vikram and my rep ID number is 126763. How may I assist you today?" Trevor Merrifield: "Hi, i would like to know if an 8400 would accept PC2 6400 ram without being downclocked"04/21/2007 (Vikram_126763): "Thank you for the information. I’ll be glad to assist you. Please give me 2 to 3 minutes to pull up your account information. (Vikram_126763): "In the meantime, May I also have your telephone number, along with the area code to update our records? Trevor Merrifield: (Vikram_126763): "Thank you for the information. We will not face any connectivity issues in our interaction. However, in case the chat still gets disconnected, we will call you back within 30 to 60 minutes to ensure that the issue is completely resolved. Please confirm if" we can reach you on the Telephone number.04/21/2007 Trevor Merrifield: "yes you can, thanks, last time my chat wasn't disconnected, I just forgot i had to ask another question"04/21/2007 (Vikram_126763): "Any alternate number to contact you?" Trevor Merrifield: "no, thats it" (Vikram_126763): "If I understood you correctly, you want to know if Dimension 8400 would accept PC2 6400 RAM without being downclocked, am I correct?" Trevor Merrifield: "ya" (Vikram_126763): "As per the records with me you have a Dimension 8400, with Windows XP Professional installed as an operating system on it. Am I correct?" Trevor Merrifield: "yes"04/21/2007 (Vikram_126763): "Please give me 2 to 3 minutes to check the hardware specifications of your computer." Trevor Merrifield: "k" (Vikram_126763): "Thank you." (Vikram_126763): "Thank you for staying online. We appreciate your patience. Trevor Merrifield: "yep" (Vikram_126763): "Trevor, the PC2 6400 Memory will work on the system but we also need to verify that it should match other memory specifications like type should be DDR2-800.00 Trevor Merrifield: "sorry, could you rephrase that?" (Vikram_126763): "Sure." (Vikram_126763): "The PC2-6400 will work provided that the Memory should be of DDR2-800 technology." Trevor Merrifield: "oh, ok thanks. So it wouldn't be downclocked?" (Vikram_126763): "That is correct." (Vikram_126763): "The once we have all the required specifications matched to install PC2 6400 Memory, it will not

(Vikram_126763): "Sorry for the typing error." (Vikram_126763): "Once we have all the required specifications matched to install PC2 6400 Memory, it will not downclock." Trevor Merrifield: "ok, so would it be best to trash my old 3200 ram if I was to get 6400 ram, or would they work fine together?" Trevor Merrifield: "what are the required specifications?" (Vikram_126763): "They will work fine together, but the speed would remain the same as old 3200 ram, hence I would suggest you to install fresh 6400 ram on the system." Trevor Merrifield: "ok, cool" Trevor Merrifield: "and 6400 ram would be reasonably faster too, right?" (Vikram_126763): "That is correct. (Vikram_126763): "Is there anything else regarding your Dell system that you need help with?" Trevor Merrifield: "ok, awesome. Do you have an opinion whether 1.5gb of 3200 ram would be faster or slower than 1gb of 6400 ram?" Trevor Merrifield: "^" (Vikram_126763): "No, only if the matching pairs are installed then it works faster." Trevor Merrifield: "sorry, could you rephrase?" (Vikram_126763): "Please allow me to explain here." Trevor Merrifield: "k" (Vikram_126763): "If your system has 3200 Memory installed then 6400 will not work, moreover, both memory with different speed will not work if installed at the same time. So, as the system has 3200 memory, we cannot upgrade it to 6400 memory, it will not work. Trevor Merrifield: "but if I got rid of the 3200 memory, it would work?" (Vikram_126763): "No, it will not work. The system will support only 3200 memory." Trevor Merrifield: "??? "Trevor, the PC2 6400 Memory will work on the system but we also need to verify that it should match other memory specifications like type should be DDR2-800."" (Vikram_126763): "Actually, when I checked the technical specifications for the memory currently shipped on the system then I updated you that the PC2-6400 memory will not work. Sorry for the inconvenience." Trevor Merrifield: "O ok sry" (Vikram_126763): "Is there anything else regarding your Dell system that you need help with?" Trevor Merrifield: "so just getting some more 3200 memory would be my best bet?" (Vikram_126763): "Yes, your system support upto 4 GB of memory.

His point is that at first, the guy told him 6400 RAM would work, and later on said that it would not work.
