Veteran Hollywood actor and film-maker Dennis Hopper has died in California. He was 74 and had been suffering from prostate cancer. Hopper starred in many films throughout a long career, appearing in both cult classics and mainstream blockbusters. He was born in 1936 and made his name as an actor in a string of television appearances during the 1950s in such long-running series as The Twilight Zone and Bonanza. His breakthrough came in 1969 with the film Easy Rider, which he both wrote and directed, and which established his reputation as a global maverick superstar. He went on to appear in such varied films as Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Speed and Super Mario Brothers.
