I would say that it depends upon the circumstances whether it's okay to swear at all or far you can go.

You do not swear in a normal conversation. "Hey dad how was your fucking day" and "Give me the fucking keys to the storageroom she bitch manager" doesn't usually go well. A "How may I fucking help you today?" is generally not really appreciated. And even when you are very pasioned about something in a debate there is no need to say "I think we should get the fuck out of this damn hell hole, shut your fucking mouth and listen to what I have to say mother!".

The only time I personally will be unlikely to disaprove of the use swearwords would be when they are used in jest towards people that you know and that won't mind it. And ofcourse when you end up hurting yourself badly or are in one of those situations where you feel like you have no choice but to either have to jump from the 10th floor (head first) OR swear. Think about the poor people who would have to clean the mess up!

If somebody walks up to me and try to get a message through and has to swear in it I won't be likely to really gain any respect for such a peron. "Now Rob you retard, shut your big mouth and die" isn't really as nice as "Rob I'm not going to discuss this any further, sorry". Though it can also be funny (and sad) in an ironic way to see somebody totally freak out while you calmely ask what is wrong with them and why they are yelling and not able to politly talk about any issues that they may have. :clueless:

I could do quite well without it. Personally, I think people should find a better way to get their points across, or to express themselves.

Donutz cracks me up! It would be pretty funny to walk into a retail establishment and have an employee say with a big smile on their face: "How may I fucking help you today?" Swearing, as it applies to this forum, doesn't bother me as long as it is kept within reason. Otherwise, I would have to concur with Donutz' statement.

Sh0wdowN;3702935In my opinion, this links with the ability to convey oneself through eloquent articulation. The more eloquent an individual is in conveying his thoughts upon in any given matter, the more sophisticated he will appear. While I have nothing against swearing, in fact, I personally employ it on many occasions, although more as an internal joke or to provide a humorous effect when with my friends, I rarely use profanity as a means of conveying a message when in the presence of people who I don't know very well.

But, as I said, somebody with decent skills in language will appear to me as more intelligent than someone who decides to use profanity in order to get his points across, this applies to both written and verbal forms. While I admit that I also swear, as long as I'm in the presence of friends and no one else, I don't mind it if other people swear in my presence, but it depends on the manner in which it is done. You don't necessarily have to spew out swear words in order to try and amplify the significance of something, yet it seems there are a lot of people who suffer from that delusion.

Eloquent articulation? No I dont agree. Each time this question comes up, someone decides to make a post just like you did. Verbal skill, eloquent articulation. I had a professor in collage, one of the smartest people I ever knew and he swore up and down. It dont matter how smart you are. Its up to you, and how you bring it across. Iam sure you can get your point across either way. But if not swearing is your thing, then cool, if you swear, then thats cool to. But someone needed to post using big words, it might as well been you. but if thats how you feel, then all the power to ya.. For me, yes i do swear, but I also know when to use swearing and when not to, thats the key I feel. theres a time for it and then theres not.

Swearing in public can get you arrested under section five of the public order act in this country. But there's nothing really wrong with it provided you're not trying to insult people and it's not your only way of expressing yourself.

You would get away with "This fine is fucking stupid, which dumbshit came up with this silly law?!" but a "Go and fuck you and your gay friend in the copcar you asshole" would get you fined for "Humiliating an official/officer on duty".

When you refute my posts, at least refute what I said instead of what you think I said. Appearing to be more intelligent is not the same as being more intelligent. Still, I don't care about your professor, you can list exceptions to every generalization but that does not falsify the generalization on a major scale, just in that single case. It's also a common conception that the one who are able to articulate themselves in an eloquent manner are of higher academical standing than the ones who resort to simple choice of descriptions. My generalization still stands in that the individuals appear to be more intelligent.
