Ever been told that if you swallow gum, it will stay in your stomach forever or wrap round your heart causing you to die? Or a bird crapping on you means that you get good luck? Honestly, how many of you believe all this?

Check out these myth's and find out the real answer! It's quite intresting to know since some of them are things that you, yourself tell other people everyday aswell as other people telling you.

Myth : Using a cell phone can give you brain cancer. The truth: No need to get a hang-up over this one.

Spoiler: Show
While cell phones do emit mild microwaves of radiation (about as dangerous as the ones you get from staring at a Hot Pocket heating up in the microwave for a few minutes), they may not actually fry a single one of your cells. Some experts believe obsessive use (such as strapping the phone to your head with duct tape) could boost your risk of brain cancer slightly, but research done on humans and animals has yet to bear this out. “There’s no solid evidence that cellular phone use does any damage to your brain,” says John Moulder, a professor of radiation biology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Myth: The Great Wall of China is the only man-made object you can see from space. The truth: Not true.

Spoiler: Show
“Although the Great Wall can be seen as a thin, gray line from a standard 250-mile-high orbit, it’s not the only man-made structure visible with the naked eye from that distance,” says Kirsten Larson, a spokeswoman for NASA. Airport runways, highways, cities, Marlon Brando’s underwear drawer, and a running list of other man-made structures can also be seen. They don’t get as much play as the Wall, because they’re not as long and thus harder to identify from that distance.

Myth : If you put your car in neutral going downhill, you’ll save gas. The truth: Sure, but it’ll kill your car.

Spoiler: Show
If you coast downhill, you can actually save fuel, simply because you’re feeding less gas to the engine. So why not take it a step further and just throw it into neutral? Technical minds at BP Amoco have concluded that while a neutral position could possibly save a tiny bit of gas when going downhill, you’ll pay back the pennies you save on fuel hundreds of times over in transmission repair. And besides, car-safety experts agree that it’s unsafe to shift in and out of neutral while moving. The techies at BP Amoco suggested a better way to conserve fuel would be to roll the windows up to reduce drag.

Myth : Swallowed gum takes seven years to digest. The truth: No way!

Spoiler: Show
The likelihood of anything staying in your stomach—even that White Castle burger—longer than a few hours is next to nil. The only time you’d have trouble, according to experts, is if you’re chewing and swallowing hundreds of pieces a day, in which case a doc will have to unstick it from your butt. Those pieces of Big Red you gulped before your date returned to the table will follow the corn kernel route, straight out of your body, undigested. This wad of gum whopper was concocted simultaneously by moms everywhere.

Myth : Roaches are the only species that’d survive a nuke blast. The truth: A small one, yes.

Spoiler: Show
If you’re talking total nuclear annihilation, no one stands a chance. But cockroach cells divide every seven days, as opposed to continually (as in humans and other animals), says Joseph G. Kunkel, a professor of biology at University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Radiation messes with cell division. So, if the blast were localized, the six-sevenths of the roach population whose cells weren’t dividing that doomsday would stagger to their feet and march on. Whoa!

You would love the show Myth busters. The show where they see if things you are told are true ar false. For example there was a myth that said if you were in a falling lift and you jumped at the exact moment it hit the ground you would be fine as there would be no force to travel through your body. It was apparantly proved false as you are still traveling at speed so you would still be injured or die from the impact. Another one was if the inflatable steps, floting devices from places cuold be used to safely get to the ground from the plane. Well the answer is no to the steps but yes to the long flat floating thing. However how are you supposed to open it thousands of feet in the air on a plane. ???

You forgot: Drinking milk and eating a pickle at the same time will sour in your stomach and kill you. (My grandmother used to say this all the time to my siblings and I, and my father who got a rise out of pissing her off constantly would do this in front of her.) Or: Kissing will get you pregnant; of course we all know this to be…well mostly false. When I was a kid the neighbor girl got PG and I still remember her crying to my mom over and over that she never kissed the boy, but only let him fondle her. Unfortunately, for this poor girl her family was a lot like the mom in Carrie…if you’ve ever seen the movie you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Here is some useful info, Well they have now definatley proven that mobile phones do not cause cancer. Or so they say? Source: BBC

Spoiler: Show
Long or short-term mobile phone use is not associated with increased risk of cancer, a major study has found. Mobile phone antennas emit electromagnetic fields that can penetrate the human brain. But a Danish team found no evidence that this was linked to an increased risk of tumours in the head or neck as had been feared. The study, of more than 420,000 mobile phone users, appears in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The researchers, from the Danish Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen, looked at data on people who had been using mobile phones from as far back as 1982. More than 56,000 had been using a mobile phone for at least 10 years. They found no evidence to suggest users had a higher risk of tumours in the brain, eye, or salivary gland, or leukaemia. Professor Tricia McKinney, Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of Leeds, said: "The results of this Danish cohort study are important as they have analysed data from mobile phone company records and do not rely on users remembering for up to 10 years in the past how often they used their phone. "The large numbers of subscribers in the study mean we can have some confidence in the results that have not linked mobile phone use to a risk of any cancer, including brain tumours." Similar findings The study follows a report published earlier this year by the Institute of Cancer Research, which concluded that mobile phone use was not associated with a greater risk of brain cancer. An independent group for the UK government, led by Sir William Stewart, that looked into the safety of mobile phones in the late 1990s also concluded mobile phones did not appear to harm health. However, expert advice is still to limit mobile phone use among young people as a precautionary measure, as their head and nervous systems may still be developing. And the government currently advises mobile phone users to keep their call times short. There are more than one billion mobile phone users worldwide.
