Here Most of you probably don't care about art...but the price caught my eye. May not sound a lot... Discuss.

They should've been on loan to a museum somewheres. Those pantings are cultural and national treasures. It isn't right for someone to be able to horde them away in their homes. Especially if they're going to be reckless enough to not secure them properly.

Pfft, communist. They're the property of the family, the rightful owners, and they can do whatever the heck they want to do with them. Even burn them. The entire world didn't paint them, her grandfather did.

Though, for somebody to be rich enough to keep paintings of that value, I'd have thought they'd also have enough money to afford decent security...

If you have two paintings that are worth 66 million dollars hanging on your walls there's a pretty big chance that you're rich.

Yeah. And didn't you see the picture of the house in question? It's slightly bigger than the three bedroom detached I live in...

Zomg, I just heard about it this morning. Its amazing how many works of art are stolen each year (even from museums). I just hope that these two are eventually returned to thier owners undamaged. Unfortunately severe damage, or even the destruction of works of art is the outcome of such theft (rarely are they sold, since they are so recognizable).

Well if that's a family heirloom... And no, I didn't see that house picture you mention... maybe I set a bit too restrictive adblock filter rules ^^' Anyway, big house doesn't mean rich. One may have been rich or inherited a big house too...

A big house costs shedloads even if you didn't buy it yourself originally. Council tax (or whatever the local equivalent is), maintenance, gas/electric bills, any staff that might work in a house that large (and they probably have some staff working in a house that large), and I'm sure the socialist French government exact more money from them somewhere... etc, etc, etc. Point is, if you aren't rich enough to cover all those expenses, or you are no longer rich, you'd probably have sold the $66 million paintings (or the house) anyway...
