My friends!

I encountered a problem that you could help me out. I'm not a gamer, of any kind, so I don't understand a thing about all this. And I’m desperate. I’m writing a screenplay and I have a short scene going on in an internet club, back in 1999-2000. The main character is supposed to help a bunch of kids, who are playing some multiplayer game. The kids want to know better and better cheats, cheats that are very hard to find, but the main character is able to get it from the internet. So the kids are very happy. What should be this game? I thought of Doom 2. But I don’t know if there are (were, back in 1999) any cheats that are so hard to find on the internet, you see I need some super-cheats, that the kids are so happy to get. So all this proves that the main character is a very good internet brain. It must be something very hard to find. So, can you help me? Thank you! Sorry for my English, not my native tongue.

Counter Strike is the obvious option if we're talking 2000. However the cheats for that are hacks, which are frowned upon by gamers, so that might not impress the kids depending on their morals. However, not being a hacker myself and not wanting to encourage others, I'd suggest fictionalising a wallhack name, eg "Penguin Wallhack CS 0.4b" or something along those lines.

PS: Good luck with the screenplay!

Just make it up. I doubt anyone watching will know any games from 2000.

First of all: thank you!

Yes, I think gamers remember very well all this, so I need it to be very realistic. So, I like this hack stuff idea, not only because of the moral issues (those help the story even better), but because I believe those are really hard to find on the internet, and my character is supposed be a very able computer-guy. That's the whole point. So if you can spare a few more minutes explain me please how these hack things work, if they were available on the internet back in 2000? How do they look like, and how do you apply them to the game? huge thanks, krisz

Nowadays, hacks are usually in torrent files that you can find in shadier corners of the Internet. They're usually a small .exe file.

My suggestion: say that the people can't access these shady sites because the internet club administrator blocked them all, but the main character guy found a proxy site and got around the filters and found them a hack.

Dude, you should make it easier for the person to understand. They said they aren't English so words like shadier and proxy might confuse.

So he says, but I find it quite legible compared to even a good portion of native English-speakers and/or typers.

And if he really needs it...

Any chance that you are good with Internet related questions too? Maybe the Stock Market?
