I'd imagine the process is mostly automated and a lot easier than digitalizing printed material.
Centuries from now people will be able to read about every action ever done by absolutly anyone who tweets.
I'm now going to use my previously unused Twitter account and crazy up this archive.
What's the point of archiving it?

I doubt it took more than a week for a couple of CS interns(unpaid interns) to write the code to do it.
The LoC has a budget of .650 billion dollars per year. The total federal government budget is 3552 billion dollars in 2010. So the LoC takes %.0182 of the government budget.
As silly as this sounds, there is some use to this. Someone could analyze the data to find trends about various things.
Glad they're not archiving IRC convos.
I wonder if the FBI, CIA, NSA, and related agencies are using these archives?
