In the terms of the 5.56 NATO stacked up against the 7.62, the obvious answer is the .308. The main problem with the .223 is that the military uses a high grain bullet; causing for very small holes in enemy targets, allowing for return fire, even if the torso has been hit a handful of times. Tumbling does not take place if the bullet grain is too high. The 30-06 would again be far better than the .308, for it is the exact same round, yet the 30-06 has a 9mm longer casing than the .308. For a military combat role, I would choose the .45 Colt, for .500 Magnum is quite excessive.

If you play Socom, then you know that the M16 is a very accurate gun while the M14 is all over the place.

M14, more accurate and doesn't jam as much as the M16 does.

M16 chambering a .500 magnum. .500 magnum because I like the round and its behaviour characteristics, also it is the more suitable round for a CQB scenario. M16 because you need a certain flexibility and the m14 is unsuitable for a CQB situation which given the current state of things you're increasingly likely to find yourself in.

Depends on the situation. In an urban setting, I'd take the M16A2 over the M14 everytime. It's lighter weight, heigher magazine capacity (30 rounds vs 20 rounds), shorter barrel length (especially if you are using the M4 Carbine), and almost zero recoil make it more suited for close quarters combat IMO than the M14. If you are looking to take some body down at ranges further than 300 meters, then yes, the M14 is probably the better choice. The M16A2 is actually very dependable, as is the M14. It's true that M16A2's will jam, but that's only if an individual isn't performing proper maintenance of their weapon. If you're looking for a weapon that will NEVER jam, then you'd be better off taking an AK-47. I've used both, the M14 and M16A2 IRL, and I'd have to choose the M16A2

Don't you guys forget that the M14 is indeed fully automatic.

That is of course another problem with it. Fully automatic encourages wild fire and lousy shot groupings, a person should have to pull the trigger for each and every round. While full auto is useful for suppressing an area the trade off in bad practices and poor accuracy are not worth it. The M16 has the same problem though so...
