Hi. I was wondering if there is anyone here who has served/ is serving in the Armed Forces? I'm not American but I served as a conscript in my country for 2 years. I've been out for about 4.5 months and I'm missing some parts of military life (not all). Life as an infantryman was totally though, but such awesome memories came out of it. Of course, I'm in a peacetime army doing peacetime things.
I know President Obama is planning an eventual pull-out from Iraq and will increase American Presence in Afghanistan. Did anyone go there for a tour? Care to share your experiences?

Im 3 years into my enlistment with the USMC. (actually 3 years exactly as of yesterday). It has its ups and downs, but I dont think I'll re-enlist. Im not infantry tho, I drive this bitch:
I'm contracted with the US Army, I'm in Army ROTC right now, but in 3 years I'll be commissioned as an officer and have to serve at least 8 years. I hope to make a career out of it though.
Finnish Coastal Jaegers (aka marines) in January '10.

Have you been deployed overseas? I've never seen an AAV in real life but I'll always remember the sound of those m113s you can hear like a mile away. I remember once I sat in what they told me was an assault boat but looked more like a oversized bathtub with a puny motor at its ass. That's as amphibous as I ever got.
I'm now in the reserves and I still have to go back for up to 40 days a year. Dammit. 10 years more until I'm fully released. How often does ROTC require you to train?
We have a training class every week during the school year and have a 3/4 day field training exercise every 6 months.

[/QUOTE] Yea I did the 31st MEU out of Okie in the first half of 08. Went to Phillipines, Thailand, and sat off the coast of Burma (Mynamar) for 60 days to help them after the hurricane. But they never let us in, so we left.
Yea AAV's are loud as hell also.

 AAV has a good motor (engine), if the damn thing is working properly.

How well equipped is your military? I think it's one of the richer countries in your area, but does that also apply to the armed forces?
Biiviz, is that a career plan, or just when your conscription period starts?
Conscription. However, I've been thinking of maybe doing the NCO training as well. Perhaps even go to the Reserve Officer School as my father did. I'm not sure, though, as I'd miss several years at University.
They (the army) wanted my brother for that NCO training, but he went to the US and toured with some choir instead. They were pretty pissed, as he found out later. Even after a couple of years later some new recruits he knew heard stories about that son of a bitch who screwed them over and went with some damn choir instead. :)
Well if it's anything like here, people who do military service get help/support finding jobs once they're out of the army and are generally looked on rather well by Universities and the like (being in the army alone isn't going to get you into Oxbridge but it certainly won't hinder you, especially if you had good grades before going into the army). It's looked on as a good thing by most (and rightly so), and I imagine that in a country like Finland where military service is compulsory then going that 'extra step' beyond what everyone has to do would reflect well on you.
In other words, if it's what you want to do then go for it.
