The government is proposing a minimum price of 40p per unit of alcohol in England and Wales in an effort to "turn the tide" against binge drinking.

It believes this could transform the behaviour of those who cause the most problems for hospitals and police.

A new alcohol strategy also aims to help local areas tackle problems and work with the drinks industry to encourage responsible drinking.

Some in the industry suggest minimum pricing would face a court challenge.

The industry said a minimum price was misguided and would hit consumers hard.

Similar proposals are already being considered by the Scottish Parliament.

Under the minimum price proposal, such as at the suggested 40p level, it would act as a floor and retailers would not be allowed to offer alcohol cheaper than that.

A cut in the top rate of income tax and in the rate of corporation tax, may be controversial, but now they've gone too far. The pricing scheme:

Great, take away one of the few things we've got left to stop us going fucking nuts. 37p on the price of a packet of cigs too, I believe.

Though - you know - all the whisky I buy is more expensive than that already, the whisky industry's been getting fucking trounced by taxes lately.

An opportunistic and amoral method of increasing revenue.

Red Menace;5625265 [A cut in the top rate of income tax and in the rate of corporation tax]

As more and more people turn to the bottle or drugs to escape the abysmal realities of the communities surrounding them. Doomed to generational deficit. Its only natural for the despotic powers that be to implement a minimum tax on individual “highs”, and accordingly, based on potency.

Drug deal economics. Supply & demand.

Illegal drugs already fall under a pseudo “taxation” through legal ramifications, and military action. Look at private prisons industries alone.

In the States, going back to the Vietnam war and prior there are numerous allegations of the contra’s being large scale narcotic industries between government intelligence agencies. Hell going back to something a little more recent, something like 90% of the worlds heroin supply comes from Afghanistan, and over the last decade or so, it just so happens the US has occupied that nation... in a war, and somehow the drug supplies remain unaffected...

The general idea of making drinkers compensate for the damage drunken people cause to society is not bad, but I doubt that any of the money collected with this tax is going to be used for that.

Taxes like this will encourage smuggling and home-brewing though.

Yep. Because the one small glass of wine I have a night sends me on a mad vandalism rampage and I cost the NHS thousands on a regular basis.

_59262473_alcohol_pricing_464in.gif I did some of the conversions of these prices to Canadian dollars to see how "bad" this is, but it works out to generally the same price for similar products here in Ontario.

Really? How much are these minimum prices an increase over previous pricing of alcohol that they would lead people to criminality? When it comes to alcohol, people will pay just about anything for it, which is what made smuggling so damn profitable during Prohibition.

Don't even need to smuggle. Open economic area. I go over to France fairly frequently just because fuel's about 20% cheaper. The only reason the UK gets away with this sort of stuff's because of the channel. Otherwise everyone would just drive across to France on the weekends.
