Associated PressCHARDON, Ohio (AP) — A teenager described as an outcast at a suburban Cleveland high school opened fire in the cafeteria Monday, killing one student and wounding four others before being caught a short distance away, authorities said. A student who saw the attack close-up said it appeared that the gunman targeted a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table and that the one who was killed was trying to duck under the table.

The Associated Press: 1 dead, 4 wounded in Ohio high school shooting

Once again the shooter is an "outcast". I don't really have much to say about the shooting other than bringing it to people's attention.

There have been 71 school shootings in the United States of America since the year 2000. There have been 11 in Canada since the year 1902, and roughly 20 in Europe since 1910.

Let's think about those statistics and then think about which country allows its citizens to obtain firearms easily. I think it's safe to say the gun control laws Canada and most European countries have in place can be justified...

Gun control isn't going to help much, IMO.

Seeing as other countries have laxish gun laws and don't have massive problems with school shooting, I'd say that you're doing a disservice to the issue by looking at it so simply.

umm......ok

Anyways, as much as it pains me to admit it, there is some truth to his statement. From what I've read and heard, Switzerland (my future country) is pretty lenient with their gun control; some sources say that people are allowed to purchase assault weapons as much as they'd like, yet they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

No, honestly, I think it's more to do with the American culture and society. Check my Male Disease thread for more details ;)

The USA has 313,087,000 citizens as of Feb 2012. Canada has 33,476,688 (280,000,000 less) citizens as of May 2011. Europe is not a country, and not all of them have the same gun laws - you don't need a license in Switzerland to buy a gun once you're over the age of 18, for example.

The near 900% difference in population may have a contributing factor. I also don't see many problems in Switzerland (1 shooting since 2000). Admittedly, this could be the reverse effect of the population difference (7,000,000 Swiss).

Even then, getting guns in countries like the U.K is not exactly impossible.

IMO the benefits of the USA's gun laws outweigh the drawbacks, but then I can only look from my rock an Atlantic away.

I wonder what goes through the kid's head that justifies bringing a gun to school and killing your peers.

Kid's are fickle, I dunno what he means by outcast, but one of the witnesses said he'd been bullied, so that could be a contributing factor.

Emotional abuse is not a laughing matter. Not that I condone what he did, but I think it goes without saying that maybe, just maybe, if he hadn't been bullied, this might not have happened. But of course, there could have been other variables in this equation.
