I was lying in bed when it hit me, who/what came up with the standard paper size of 8.5 by 11. Anyone know/have a theory on it?

I guess it is because the paper is in a good ratio that way, I think the width is about .75 the height. As I stated before, it's a excellent ratio, and you save more paper than by having it 9 by 12.

First of all you think of weird things when your in bed. I think they made it that because anything bigger would have been to big but anything smaller would be to small, It's the perfect size

I'm too lazy to calculate how large the paper size is you are talking about in metric units but in Europe A4 paper is the most commonly used size of paper. It measures 210 by 297 mm. Why this size?

Well as you all probably know each A# shape is half as large or twice as large as the following A# paper. A5 is double the size of A4, A3 is double the size of A4, A2 is double the size of A1, A1 is double the size of A0. A0 should have a total surface of 1m². Or to put it in an other way: the ratio between the long side and short side is the square root of 2. This ratio remains the same when the sheet is cut in half along the long side.
