book;4569407Heh, even if you don't believe the bible, I'd say that giving your life for others is the ultimate selfless act.

I would second what Showdown said.

Having a child. That is absolutely selfless.

I think everyone takes selfless far to literally. Putting yourself in danger to help others is selfless, I don't care if it is because you feel better because of it. As far as I'm concerned a selfish act is anything you do that helps someone and furthers them, with no tangible gain for yourself. Evne some things that have tangible gains but have enourmous risk I would also call slefless. For example, fighting a (valid) war would be selfless though you do gain from it ( after all, soldiers are paid, given good benefits and all that.)

Allowing someone out of a junction even though you have the right of way. I don't see how this can be considered selfish. Same goes for holding a door open for someone that you know is about to walk through it. How are these acts selfish?

Well the idea is that it gives you either self satisfaction or you do it with the subconscious hope that they will do something nice for you. In fact, the only things that can be viewed as selfless are those done out of habit that aren't thought about. And that's still debatable. All are theories though, no philosopher has come to a definitive or totally excepted theory.

Are you sure? Really think about it. Isn't having a baby a result of self motivated act? Are women also not given the choice of abortion?

Which ironically is probably the furthest thing from the truth, as almost everyone are biologically calibrated to want a baby to ensure their genes getting passed on.

Any act can have a hint of selfishness in it, from different perspectives, but sometimes the person doesn't act out of selfishness, but it still seems he/she could be. It's hard to explain, and I'm doing a fairly bad job of it.

Laying ones life down for another could be viewed as a "selfish act", if the person wished to be remembered as a hero. But most of the time that is not the case, it's just how you see that act in your opinion. People commit non-selfish acts everyday that are viewed as selfish acts through someone elses eyes.

EX: A person asks me to get a packet of ketchup for him, I go get a packet of ketchup for him.

It could be viewed that I'm just trying to help the person out (non-selfish), or it could be viewed that I'm trying to gain the person's friendship, (possibly selfish).

A selfish act is something that you do for yourself, knowing about it too. To extend my thought also, not with opening doors so much, but letting people out of junctions and such. Most of the time it isn't because I am 'kind and considerate', it is simply because they need to get out, and I'm not going anywhere fast. That wouldn't be deemed selfish or selfless, just simply would be.

I disagree. People have Sex for themselves. A Child can (sometimes on occasion accidentally) be a result of that.
