Hearthstone tournament explains why women aren't allowed to play [updated] | PC Gamer

A user on Reddit's Hearthstone community yesterday shared this image—from an announcement page for a Hearthstone qualifier taking place during Finland's Assembly Summer 2014. What made "Karuta's" post notable was a single, highlighted sentence: "The participation is open only to Finnish male players." ... The IeSF, or International e-Sports Federation, is a global organisation based in South Korea that is comprised of e-sports associations from across the world. Their stated aim is to promote e-sports as a "true sport". The IeSF's sixth World Championship will take place this November, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Here's the tournament list, from the organisation's Facebook event page:

  • Male Competition: Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, Ultra Street Fighter IV
  • Female Competition: Starcraft 2, Tekken Tag Tournament 2
... "The decision to divide male and female competitions was made in accordance with international sports authorities, as part of our effort to promote e-Sports as a legitimate sports."

So, males, have you noticed that your Y-chromosome really gives you a huge advantage over women in video games? Females, have you found that your fragile bodies and minds can't handle going up against males in the no-hold-barred world of computer-based combat? Do you feel safer, knowing that the International e-Sports Federation is protecting you from a chance to win tens of thousands of dollars in a competition against men?

Quite stupid really. Sports are segregated by sex for the simple reason that men are almost always bigger then women - a 250 lbs man smashing into a 150 lbs (if even) would result in serious injury.

If they want eSports to be taken seriously, this isn't going to help.

I've never really been able to tell if someone was a female except for when they had voice-chat enabled =p

It is a Korean organization, those guys can be quite sexist, considering how wealthy they are.

But the way they tried to explain it kinda makes sense - they wanted to encourage girls to game (not sure if that is a worthwhile goal) by providing female only groups. They probably thought that the prospect of being the only girl in a group of nerdy boys might scare most girls away. And organizing the event in a way that maintains current gender ratios by implicitly only allowing a small subset of all interested females would be kind of sexist too.

The way I see it the important part is to have the big competitions as a mixed gender event. Having female only groups to encourage more female gaming doesn't bother me. You can probably have those without excluding girls from the male only groups though.

Only open to Finnish male players? A repugnant example of Finnish privilege!

It is kind of stupid because you don't even have to reveal your identity in Internet games, but if there weren't separate series for men and women there would be very few women in e-sports (because there are a lot less female gamers in competitive games). Besides, some female gamers seem to prefer women-only groups as well, like those feminist "geek girl" communities.

I don't get why Hearthstone falls into this category. It's a game of cards and strategy, the same way Poker and Blackjack are not sports, neither should Hearthstone. For games like WoW, I can let it slide (key phrase here, I don't support it), they do have characters with equippable items. But Hearthstone is just cards and strategy, any girl can do as well as any guy.

If you're trying to set yourself up as though you're THE international federation, the #1 organization, why segregate, and not only segregate, but offer fewer game options for one side? It's not like biathlon is a males-only event and the 100m dash is restricted to females.

Ridiculous! Video games are a competition of focus and skill, not physical ability! Much like chess, thee is no reason to segregate the sexes in esports. You want the best on your teams who work well together, not the best single sex for the job -_-

Yeah, it doesn't make sense if they don't actually introduce two tournaments and then don't allow women in the only one.

But in a game like CS which has a hugely competitive scene, without the women's series you wouldn't have female players pretty much at all at eSports events. And apparently people like to have them too. That said, I personally wouldn't mind unified single series tournaments even if it meant there possibly were no female players.
