It's a joke, plain and simple, and I'm ashamed to have been raised for 16 years of my life in that denomination. So here's a well-thought out, well-reasoned article that gives a penetrating, scientific approach to why Southern Baptism is just plain ridiculous.

someone found a new favorite site.

My favorite is when the Westboro Baptist Church tried to protest comicon a few years ago.

Well, living in Texas this is Baptist land. TBH most of the Southern Baptists I meet on a day to day basis are mostly nice, as long as you don't appear 'off' to them. The biggest problem with me is not appearing to look like a real American, black or white, so they think I'm someone mooching off them, but my work ethic and such generally they get over that. Most of them just seem to want to keep to themselves. I've of course heard plenty of cases with much more devout families where I grew up and the strong desire by some peers to leave the household when they could as a result.

The problem more comes in imo with the politicized congregations, particularly in the vein of the evangelical congregations, who have pushed for certain 'reforms' in the education realm and other political policy- backing various things that might seem antithetical to their beliefs in the first place. That's really where it bugs me.

That is one HELL of a caveat. =p

Heh. I remember, when I was much younger, one of my cousins asking why I hadn't been baptised. "Don't you want to go to heaven?" She asked, with that sort of shocked, empty sound in her voice.

I believe my response was something like, "Don't you want to go to Narnia? Same thing."

Generally though, as long as you leave religious people alone they're happy enough to leave you alone. Apart from the occasional ones that support changes in the law, or who come around calling. And in all honesty I don't much mind the ones who call, as long as they're polite enough about the discussion.

Back when I was in uni I ended up inviting the mormons in, we got around the computer and spent an afternoon looking up various bits of scripture. They'd bookmarked pages, I had the biblegateway site open.... =p

Automated cross referencing of things you just barely remember is awesome. Technology marches on. All considered, I think I knew more about the scriptural basis of their beliefs than they did. When you get down to talking about what the translations of certain words might mean, you've lost the ability to talk meaningfully with 99% of the population. Too many steps of ... abstraction from what they're familiar with.

There was this one really odd group I'd never heard of before who came calling once. Church of Mary or something. They believed only when everyone worshipped Mary as the mother of Jesus would peace come to earth. -shrug- Must have been a fairly niche group.

To be perfectly honest with you, as far as "Believing in a Jewish, virgin-birthed zombie and his various anxiety disorder stricken God-father" goes, is that really all it takes to make the jump from "reasonable religion" to ridiculous?

Not at all, but Southern Baptism is a completely different can of worms. I mean, if you thought Protestant Christianity, in and of itself, was bad, Southern Baptism is almost completely uncompromising. To put it succinctly, they're about one step above fundamentalism.

Is Southern Baptist the Denomination where they think Jesus died in a bar brawl, but was resurrected when he roared out of his tomb in a NASCAR?

No...no...where do these rumors come from? SB believe in the Bible. There is no offbeat beliefs(keep in mind I'm talking about SB as a whole)

Those Westboro group are plain nuts and a shame to SB everywhere.

Edit: In the parody link it's states SB hate Jews...this is not true as SB heavily supports Jews as they are God's people. SB believes that Jews will be in heaven next to other true Christians.
