Has anyone else heard of the website FamilyTreeNow?
It's fucking scary. It seems to be posing as a free family tree site, it requires no signup or login, it costs nothing, but it's primary function seems to be total and unequivocal instant access to a verity of public records in the US.
Using this tool I was able to find out the current address, address history, family members, and possible associates of RadioActiveLobster and Book, with nothing more then their name and the state they lived in.

I hope no one finds out George W. Bush is my great uncle once-removed.

It's not scary, nor is it "posing" as a family tree site. It's a records archive. As you said, it's just a gateway to public records. There's nothing on here that you couldn't find through other sources. It exists to help genealogists track down records more easily.
It's also worth noting that opting out isn't going to remove you from public records. There's no way, to my knowledge, to do that.

Heh, it even has my address back from when I was working as intern in the US.
