As I'm sure that a few of you that still visit the network sites have noticed that the Network Insider (although the last one was renamed to "Filefront's Weekly Network News Update - Issue 167"). After posting a poll on both of the GTA and Bridge Commander sites it seems that most users don't even know that it exists or think that its well "crap"!

So I'd thought that I would post on the forums to see what people actually think of it, since I first started doing it almost 20 weeks ago now I've added things and improved it a lot (well I've been told this) yet I have a feeling that not that many people actually look at it? (I've added pictures to make it look better from not long after I started doing it)

I think it's more to do with the layout of the network sites rather than the actual content of the news. I have posted several pieces of news on HaloFiles, all to do with continuing site issues and how I would've liked submitters to ease off for a while, just unti everything gets sorted out, and they all either went unnoticed, completely ignored or forgotten about within the first few seconds of them being read.

I will admit that I haven't read ALL the insiders since that would probably be about 5 years worth or something, but I have been reading the last 10 or so.

With the old network site layout, news was a lot more noticable.

So no, it isn't cr*p.

That does make sence since the new layout (well since it was last updated) has the news at the bottom of the site below the files where people probably wont see it. Although one small request though to those that have voted saying that it should be improved please can you also comment, just so I know where to improve :)

(I should point out though that I don't have that much skill with graphical programs (I can do basic reskins and small things but not really that good at it) and while I do know a fair bit of html, its not that advanced but compare the most recent one to the first one that I did and I think that I've improved it since then (I hope?)

The first one that I did - 149# - http://betonsoldier.filefront.com/news/FileFront_Network_Insider_149;47289

(ok I admit I had to search for it on Google, lol that's why there is a random site ;) )

(edit - I voted for other so that I didn't have to press the poll results for the poll all the time!)

Just so you know, I voted for the "It's good keep it up!" option in the poll.

If I could improve it, and if it were possible, I would have button tabs in the Insider, filtering out news for that specific game/situation. Basically, making only certain bits of news visible when pressed as people may not want to read through the whole article to get to something that they are interested in.

Users like simplicity, that much is a given. Otherwise, it's pretty much perfect the way that it is.

I don't really read it that much, but if it had a email subscribe feature (it might already have one) I'd read it more often, as I really can't be bothered to go onto a network site to read it. But if the network insider were on the main page or done with an email subscribe feature, I would read it more often.

The content is quite good though, and it highlights all the coolest mods and games and such from weeks gone by. The coolest feature is that you can go back in time, and see what was on everybody's mind from a few years back, and even see games and such that were lost and dropped or had features changed. Pretty neat I think.

I think the position of the news on the main page is partly to blame for the low view count. That being said, the daily unique visitors count has probably dropped significantly over the years. The insider used to get 100,000 views, these days it seems to dropped to around 1000.

I don't know, the network insider seems to have become a way to plug Gaming Today.

I do like the improvements. The screenshots are a nice addition.

IMO the Network Insider isn't bad in so much as the Network itself is now hopelessly irrelevant, serving largely niche modding communities, while the network sites themselves now show their age and are generally slow, a bit of a mish-mash, and the quality of the content can be a bit hit and miss, and naturally the insider is a reflection of all this.

I'm not having a go, but I just think it'd be good to be brutally honest and say the Network needs to come into the 21st century somehow, mainly by getting rid of the sites that don't serve any use and replacing them with all the games that would bring a lot more traffic in but are, for some reason, not covered.

IMO the reason activity on the network, the forums, and as such the insider, has been on a steady decline is partly at least because there's no relevant network sites feeding them here anymore - since 90% of the games covered are now largely unplayed - the visitor numbers have gone down rather dramatically I imagine.

I think that FF generally needs to be 'refreshed' altogether. It's not really as big and 'famous' as it was IMO. I never even knew about this anyway but it looks good to me....maybe it's just a publicity issue?
