The Associated Press caption accompanying the image with a black person says he's just finished "looting" a grocery store. The AFP/Getty Images caption describes lighter skinned people "finding" bread and soda from a grocery store. No stores are open to sell these goods.

New Orleans, Sept. 1, 2005 - It's criminal. From what you're hearing, the people trapped in New Orleans are nothing but looters. We're told we should be more "neighborly." But nobody talked about being neighborly until after the people who could afford to leave … left

There are gangs of white vigilantes near here riding around in pickup trucks, all of them armed, and any young Black they see who they figure doesn't belong in their community, they shoot him.

But nobody cares. They're just lawless looters ... dangerous

The hurricane hit at the end of the month, the time when poor people are most vulnerable. Food stamps don't buy enough but for about three weeks of the month, and by the end of the month everyone runs out. Now they have no way to get their food stamps or any money, so they just have to take what they can to survive.

Every day countless volunteers are trying to help, but they're turned back. Almost all the rescue that's been done has been done by volunteers anyway.

here is the real truth, they were watching our in need of help Americans die and suffer because they are afraid of us African Americans and other poor races & it make me mad because these scum just are sitting around while people die and it is sick.

they can't even take care of our affairs here in America, how are they going to help other country's when this place is a hell hole. It made me sick to see Veterans dying and they fault for this country like my dad, & my step brother is now fighting in Iraq & even he called me & said that he feels ashamed & appalled at what he has saw this week from our fake country

Aren't those two items from two different groups (I don't know how the media setup is overthere but one reads "AP" and the other "AFP". Asuming these are two different newsgroups I would say you will have to asume one group discribes all looters as looters and the other as "finders". Now if the same newsgroup does give a different discription for the same sort of situation that would be a real shame and racist.

The Associated Press - http://www.ap.org/ NFP - Not quite sure what it stands for but has a different site -http://www.afp.com/english/home/ the second source which describes people as 'finding' shows that they are desprate for food and resources whereas the other is just 'looting' which implies criminal activity rather than stealing bread to feed the family. It essentally just shows the two sources opinions on looting/finding and isnt really racist.

Look at what they are carrying! The black "looter" has a bag chock-full of goodies. The white couple really only has two items. Who would you say was looting and discovering? The person with just two things, or the guy with a bag full of crap?

What are you talking about, its merely a coincidence that you take offense to that. Who makes up the majority of New Orleans? blacks. The white couple is probably in a section of New Orleans that didn't have a grocery store witht hings in it, or they found bread before they got to a supermarket. The fact is, they aren't discouraging blacks, at least not from this, but just that things happen like that. Believe me, if i was black, white, hispanic, or asian, and a hurricane flooded my city, you bet i would loot a supermarket for food.

I don't think they were trying to offend the African-American population, I think it was merely a description and a coincidence.

It brings out the worst, and best in people. Anyone with the urge to survive will do whats within his/hers powers to stay alive. Moral and ethics are right out the window here.

Hope you stay well, try to keep a good spirit despite all the shit around.
