A Sicilian man stole sweets and a packet of chewing gum so he could get arrested and spend New Year's Eve in a jail cell rather than be with his wife and relatives, Italian media reported on Friday.

The 35-year old Sicilian first showed up at a police station on Thursday asking to be arrested because he preferred spending the night in prison rather than with his family, but was rebuffed because he had not committed a crime, the Agi news agency said.

The man immediately went to a tobacco shop next door, where he threatened the owner with a box cutter as he grabbed a few sweets and a packet of gum. He then waited until police arrived to arrest him for robbery, the news agency said. Man opts for jail over New Year with relatives - Yahoo! Canada News

So how far would go to not spend your holidays with your family?

Yeah, but then you've got a criminal record, which most likely means: bye-bye dream job.

This more of an infraction instead of a crime. So no criminal record. He was still apprehended but that doesn't mean much.

Hehe, funny though dependingon the law overthere he does risk being "tagged" (criminal record) for the rest of his life.

He wouldn't eb the first though, it's not unknown for homeless people to try and get jailed during the winter to get a warm place to sleep, free food and such when the homeless shelterers are overcrowed. Overhere there would have been an easier way to get arrested, just try and behave "suspicious" or do anything that warrant the police to stop you and ask for your ID, tell them you can't ID yourself, they might hold you untill they can verify who you are.

How far would I go? I don't have any reason not to spent time with my family. But if i did I could probably just tell them the truth. If all that wasn't an option I'd just go to some place (a friend for example) and drop of the radar, If asked where I was I'd tell them I got stuck somewhere and make something up.
