Wow. Another case of relying on instruments too much I bet. If the pilot just looked at his VFR charts he probably could have realized that he was in the wrong place. Even worse is the fact that the control tower failed to recgonize an unauthorized flight. If a plane tried to land at a US military base without authorization, you can bet that guy is going to get a long suspension and one hell of a fine.

I'm suprised the people on the base didn't treat it as a hijacking and surrond the plane and wait for the SAS to arrive. Reminds me of the story of the German pilot in WW2 who landed in the UK by mistake after he lost his way home after a dogfight...

But how could a plane land without authorization or the people at the bases air traffic control telling it to turn back.

Just be glad it's the UK, if a plane missed the runway around here and landed at Langley AFB (OK, it's hundreds of miles from DC but it could have missed Richmond airport) than the military would be ridaculed for NOT shooting it down. How times have changed...
