I would never join the British armed forces, serious budget cuts. The 3 branches are all fighting about who's going to take the biggest cut. It will likely be the navy as they aren't doing much these days and the Army needs new helies IIRC. I have an article from a British newspaper somewhere in my room...

Canada doesn't have a Coast Guard?

Well you said 3 branches, so I just assumed Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Was talking about UK, and most people probably don't look at the coast guard as a branch per say. The average person would probably see it as part of the navy...Like the Marines. (SORRY! I'M ALL FOR A SEPARATE BRANCH! nct) Or a paramilitary organization. In fact I think the CG is considered paramilitary in most nations.

Oh, ok I didn't see the 'British' part =p

I consider the Coast Guard a separate branch because they are and they're awesome.

computernerd;5294610Are you talking about basic training or the actual work that you do once you become a Soldier?

All of the above. Hell one guy was in Iraq getting chewed out for taking the wrong number of flannels on patrol. He had an extra flannel, truly he will attract many bullets with it... :vikki:

Most of it comes from stories/impressions of people I know who've worked with them admittedly, it's not like I've any personal experience with the army. It probably varies depending on your officers and speciality, but with such a broad distribution of work ethic and such a penalty if you end up with some tin-pot dictator why would you take the risk?

Got to be some pretty significant pay off for that sort of penalty. And when you're younger maybe there is but from most of what I hear the enlistees aren't the most wonderful people in the world either. Friend's trying to get out of the military right now purely because he's sick of the young people being absolute cunts/screwing with his stuff.

Might be better were I to enlist as an officer, and since I'll have my masters in about a year's time, assuming I have the money to finish uni, that wouldn't be too hard. But if that's the prevalent sort of attitude I don't imagine it would be a culture I'd enjoy working in. Got to like the people you work with.

Well basic training is designed to be that way, it's supposed to break you down and build you back up, so that you learn to take orders without question.

However, that's pretty shitty of the superior to chew him out for one extra flannel, I'd think you would only get chewed out for the opposite.

Yeah that's dumb. Commanders get so pissed off for the stupidest reasons...

I dunno, I guess maybe it could be due to stress. I know a lot of superiors get angry when they're stressed often. I remember I was on a compass course that my whole squad had to complete, and one idiot left when he wasn't supposed to, so I chewed him out >:|
