Remember the good old times when we used to argue about that guy?

Say what you want, but he turned out to be a pretty good painter: Pictures President Bush Painting Gallery - Business Insider

I thought the picture of the former Australian president was Dick Cheney...

Awkward...

He is a pretty good painter though, most of the liberal media claims otherwise, however. I'd like to see what else he can paint, maybe something less... political.

They're not too bad, but it is so that he didn't stick to portraits instead of politics :p

I don't know whether he's a good painter or not. If that's the best he can do, then he's not. Just based on what's shown - not that you can really tell, his skill might be above that shown in that style or it might not - I wouldn't call him a good painter. I wouldn't call him a painter at all in the sense that I'd expect him to have put a significant amount of time towards honing the skill; i.e. in the sense that I'd expect it to form a significant part of his identity.

Here's a painting my mother made:

Picture taken with crappy phone camera.

And she's far from the best artist I know.

Bush's painting is what I'd expect from someone who's been painting for a year maybe on an intermittent basis. It's got a reasonable sense of proportion but.... -shrug-

I suspect that this praise is the result of people who don't think they could do it, and haven't invested the time in the skill to be able to meaningfully say how hard or easy it is. Generally people seem to churn out a couple of crappy drawings or what have you, conclude they have no skill, and declare anyone who's stuck with it for a while as innately blessed and thus, 'good.'

Even if the level that person's reached is relatively low.

But then it depends what measuring stick you're using for good as well, I suppose. For an amateur effort; for someone just fucking around to idly amuse themselves; sure, they're decent enough. You can tell what they're meant to be and that's further than most seem to get.

You know? I'm not sure what standard of ability people are talking about when they say 'good' in this regard. By my standards the paintings shown aren't.

I suppose is one way to look at it is this: Would you really frame and hang painting of that level on your walls, (at least if the subject matter were just random people rather than evil politicians) ?

It's kind of sad that we're so obsessed with past presidents that we fill a gallery with mediocre paintings just because a past president (And not a particularly revered one) painted them.

Lets all make threads about why we should all vote for John Kerry.

Well, he, himself admits they aren't all that great.

Twenty-four portraits of world leaders Mr Bush met while in office are featured in the exhibit. The former US president told NBC he was reluctant to make them public "because I'm not a great artist".

BBC News - George W Bush exhibits his paintings of world leaders

Some of them though, like his self-portrait, I think are actually pretty good. Better than I could have done, no doubt.

Painting is one of the most subjective forms of art. There isn't a pre-defined example of what a good or bad painting is. Some people look at abstract art and go "the fuck?" while others marvel at its complexity.

Not all artists reach for the same goals. We could have a ten hour long discussion on the subjectivity of art, but it would be pointless. =p

Plus, you label it "folk art" and it can be smeared shit on canvas and people will buy it.
