So....After a night of not enough sleep, I started having strange thoughts, and I realized some very strange things.

Why do you spend so much time thinking of a name for your pet, but then spend your pet's entire life calling your pet by a pet name instead of the name you gave your pet?

I am confused. Thoughts?

I'm gonna assume that by 'pet name' you mean 'nickname'.

My dog is named Frankie. I call him Frankie. I did not name him, so no time spent thinking about the name. I've never named any pet in my life, but if I did, I would call it by that name instead of some nickname. I just call things by their proper name.

It's not like pets have birth certificates. If you start calling it by another name, that becomes its name. It doesn't care one way or another.

I started calling my mother's dog, "Riley" "Riles", because of Riles' pug avatar. The dog's name is Riles now.

Well, one of my cats has two nicknames, both originating from her name, so I call her either by her name or one of her nicknames. I remember I used to completely forego calling another one of my cats by his name and calling him "rabbit" instead, because when he was eating he looked a bit like one. Lindale-nii, you need more sleep.

My dogs usually get called by their name, or "puppy" or else some infantile derivative of their name.

The cat gets called "cat" or "kitty". She gets called by her given name like once a month.

Honestly though, you can call most animals by anything. They will respond to a given tone usually used towards them.

Our first family dog was a pedigree dog, and so had an official name along the lines of 'Kingsheath Alundra Blaze' or something like that.

We called her Rosie, because of reasons.

There's no rhyme nor reason to a pet's name, because the pet can't speak English. Or any human language, for that matter. As my dad always said, you should just pick a name that you wouldn't be embarrassed to shout in a public place.

My cat is named Chica, I usually call her that or at times call her Chiquita or Chiquita Banana...

Or simple "poes" (pussy cat).

My cat's called "Noo-Noo", you know... from the Teletubbies.

My dog's name is "Murphy", but I call him The Thing, because he's a creepy-looking 1.5 year-old Chihuahua.
