Somehow i came across an article regarding "regretting" actions. I came to think about it, and i find it quite interesting. We feel guilt over an action we already have comitted, but can do nothing about. There's no way to cure regret, except it usually passes away over time. But knowing that there's nothing to do about past actions, why do humans regret? (Yes, i have some strange thoughts this late and when i'm bored)
We humans collect and store our thoughts and use these stored thoughts to create our view of ourselves. That means that every memory contributes to your being, your personality, your character--everything you are. People associate and soon become their thoughts. That is why thinking bad thoughts about yourself will depress you and in extreme cases turn you into that negative bitch nobody seems to like. He just radiates negativity. People attach themselves to their thoughts just like they attach themselves to their personal belongings. "Oh, Joe has a huge 50" HD television and a 67 Mustang GT" "Yeah, he is so cool." See what I am saying here? People become their thoughts and their possessions.
So when you do something stupid enough that it stays in your mind--something stupid enough to be regretted--then you identify with that thought as well as all the positive ones too. The thought becomes a part of your identity just like an arm and a leg. Since you have a part of you that you do not like then you criticize yourself for it just like you criticize your looks or your lack of possessions. The regret stays with you because it is you.
Incredible response! I actually wrote wrong. There are some kinds of regret you can "cure". Just as a small example. When i first got into Machinima, i had a bad start and i regretted to ever have uploaded those videos. I regretted it all the way until i thought, "If i remove them i'll end up regretting it one day. If i put them as private i wont". Regret cured.
To sum up Aeroflot – we have emotions therefore we have regret. People who are emotionally detached or who suffer from OC (damage to the orbitofrontal cortex of the brain) often are incapable of regret. Supernatural creatures such as unicorns or seraphim are said to lack regret because they do not express human emotion.
we realise we could have had a better outcome depending on your personality, and wish it had been so
We regret to we won't do anything stupid AGAIN.
I don't regret anything except for falling in love once but even that I do not regret anymore because I learn from every action. There is no regret only experience.

I don't understand regret. What is it? Is it sadness? I'm sad because of things I don't have now, (hypothetically speaking,) and I may consider my past actions foolish or wise, but I'm not sad of the actions that led to that point, that's just an exercise in futility.

That's probably exactly why you experience regret - you've done something stupid, something that has impacted upon your life or that of somebody else negatively, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. You don't often experience regret, at least not for long, when you do something stupid that you can correct, after all.
Supposedly it's a mechanism to help you learn from your mistakes in future. Never quite pans out that way 'cause we're all dumbasses at heart, but that's the theory at least.
To me, regret is a tool of God to prove to us, human beings, that we are creatures and have our limits.
