This is a fairly simple request, but it's something that I've been unable to find a definitive answer anywhere. Is there an offline multiplayer or 'free roam' similar to that in GTA SA? I ask because I only have 1 controller, but would definetely purchase another if it meant I could have drunken free roaming with my mate without having to go online.

Any info appreciated :)

The only offline option is to just fool around and don't do any missions, as for doing it with friends you have to do the online version.

But can you fool around and not do any missions with more than one player? A la 'San Andreas' ?

San Andreas didn't have multiplayer (other than a PC Mod) so I don't get what you mean.

I don't know anything about consoles, but I remember hearing there was some sort of rampage mode in certain areas that allowed you to play with a friend (which I assumed meant someone else in the room using another controller). Perhaps that is what he means?

Two Choices.. Single Player You do missions or fool around by yourself. You can't play with a second person on the same console. Multi Player You can play Multi Player which allows you to play with other people over the internet. The only way you can play with your friend is if he has his own console that is hooked up to the internet.

San Andreas, on the PS2, had a 'free roam multiplayer' mode, that when you walked into the little red icons located around the map, allowed two players on the same screen to play together, no missions, limited access to areas and stuff, but was fun to play. I was just wondering if there was similar in GTA IV. But thanks for the info :)

Nope, GTA IV has absolutely no two player mode. I know GTA: San Andreas did because me and my friends played two players sometimes. Unfortunately, they took that out in Grand Theft Auto IV. Like I mentioned above, the only way to play Grand Theft Auto IV on two players, is if you both have two separate consoles, two separate games, and they are both connected to the internet. I hope that answered your question.

Yep, it did, thankyou. Dissapointing, but what I thought was the case.

There is a free roam mode in single player, you can pause the story mode on your phone. On your phone go to options, scroll down to 'Turn sleep mode on' press A/X and voila! you can roam to your hearts content* without being pestered by characters wanting you to do missions. * IIRC islands remain locked if you haven't got sufficiently far in the story to unlock them.
